Amerisleep Mattress Review
AS3
Amerisleep was launched in 2010, right when online mattress shopping started to take off. The company currently makes five mattresses in increasing firmness levels, as well as hybrid versions of most models. In addition to mattresses, Amerisleep also sells bed frames, pillows, and bedding.
We’ll focus here on the Amerisleep AS3, formerly known as the Liberty mattress. This 12-inch all-foam mattress contains a cotton-polyester blend cover, a top layer of memory foam, a transitional polyfoam layer with five zones, and a high-density polyfoam support core. It’s right in the middle on the firmness scale, coming in at a 5 out of 10 or “medium.”

Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Review: Our Verdict
With its medium firmness level, the Amerisleep conforms closely to minimize pressure points in side and back sleepers under 230 pounds. It’s a tad on the soft side for stomach sleepers or those who weigh more than 230 pounds. If you prefer a softer or firmer mattress, Amerisleep has two plush models and two firm models to suit every taste.
The mattress has pros and cons for couples. Thanks to the memory foam, you should notice hardly any disturbance when your partner moves around. The mattress is also silent, so you won’t wake each other up during nighttime bathroom visits.
On the downside, weaker edge support means you’re likely to gravitate toward the center of the mattress, which may be a problem if you share a smaller bed. The mattress also lacks bounce, meaning it’s not optimal for sex.
The Amerisleep mattress is priced slightly above average for an all-foam mattress. This can be justified by the higher-quality foams, which are more eco-friendly than some other mattresses.
The hybrid version costs a little more, but it has better edge support and it will sleep cooler thanks to airflow through the coils. The coils also provide some bounce, which some people will appreciate for sex or for switching sleeping positions.

Keep Shopping if…
- You tend to sleep hot
- You like to sleep near the edge of the bed
- You weigh more than 230 pounds or sleep primarily on your stomach
How Much Is the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress?
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress costs $1,499 for a queen, which is slightly steep compared to other all-foam mattresses sold online.
This is the mid-level mattress from Amerisleep, which also sells the all-foam AS1 and AS2 at lower price-points and the AS4 and AS5 at higher price-points. The difference in price is mainly due to the thicker comfort layers in the AS4 and AS5, which provide a plusher sleep surface.
Amerisleep also sells the AS3 in a hybrid version, which retails at $1,999 in a queen size. This is on-par with other hybrid models in its category.

How Does the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Feel?
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress has a medium firmness level, which equates to a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. The memory foam is quite plush and will contour to your body, reducing pressure points. However, it will also regain its original shape faster than traditional memory foam, minimizing the feeling of being stuck in the bed.
The transitional layer is zoned, providing alternating support and cushioning for the areas that need it most. This layer helps promote spinal alignment and prevents sleepers from sinking straight onto the high-density polyfoam base layer.
What Is the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Made Of?
Cover Material
The AS3 has a breathable cover made from a blend of cotton and polyester, which assists with temperature regulation on the surface. Under the cover, a Green Guard fire sock made from rayon eliminates the need for the harsh chemicals that are usually used as a fire barrier.
Comfort Layers
The comfort layer in the Amerisleep AS3 consists of 3 inches of memory foam with a density of 4 pounds per cubic foot (PCF). This is considered medium density, meaning the foam will conform closely but has a quicker response to pressure than traditional memory foam. This layer has an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 10, which is plush.
The foam used is a proprietary open-cell foam called Bio-Pur, which is made with a zero-emission process and replaces some of the petroleum with plant-based materials. The open-cell design allows for more airflow, helping the mattress stay cool.
Transition Layer
Two inches of high-density 1.65 PCF polyfoam ease the transition onto the base layer. The foam is quite firm, with an ILD of 30.
Called the “HIVE,” this transition layer features surface modification technology in the form of hexagonal cutouts. These are arranged in five zones to provide targeted support and pressure relief for different areas.
Support Core
The mattress is supported by a 7-inch high-density polyfoam base layer. This layer is extremely firm, with an ILD of 35. It provides a stable platform that supports the spine and keeps the mattress from bottoming out. This foam has a density of 1.5 PCF.
What Type of Sleeper Is the Amerisleep AS3 Best for?
The Amerisleep AS3 is the most popular mattress by Amerisleep, designed to appeal to the vast majority of sleepers. We found its medium firmness level to be best-suited to back and side sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds.
Stomach sleepers or those who weigh more than 230 pounds should look into the AS1 or AS2, which have a firmer surface. Alternatively, Amerisleep’s hybrid line will provide more support for those over 230 pounds.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers require a mattress that cushions the hips and shoulders while keeping the spine aligned. The AS3 provides a sufficiently plush surface to maintain spinal alignment and reduce pressure points in side sleepers under 230 pounds. The AS4 and AS5 are even plusher and offer a closer-conforming feel that benefits side sleepers in all weight categories.
Combination Sleepers
The Amerisleep AS3 accommodates most sleep positions in people who weigh less than 230 pounds, making it suitable for combination sleepers in this weight group. Despite the memory foam, it’s possible to switch sleep positions relatively easily on this mattress.
Back Sleepers
The Amerisleep mattress earns the highest rating from back sleepers under 130 pounds, who find it provides an excellent balance of support and pressure relief. Back sleepers under 230 pounds also experience sufficient support in the AS3, but those who weigh over 230 pounds may find the mattress allows for too much sagging under the hips.
How Does Body Weight Impact the Amerisleep Mattress's Performance?
The medium firmness level of the Amerisleep mattress makes it appropriate for most people under 230 pounds. This group will find that the mattress alleviates pressure points while maintaining proper spinal alignment. The exception is stomach sleepers between 130-230 pounds, who may experience excessive sagging under the heavier hip area.
As a general rule, the more you weigh, the firmer a surface you want in your mattress. The Amerisleep AS3 falls at a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which is on the lower end of the sweet spot that appeals to most sleepers. However, people who weigh more than 230 pounds tend to prefer a firmer mattress with more support.
For this reason, the Amerisleep AS3 is not the best choice for this weight group, causing sagging under the hips regardless of sleep position. The good news is that Amerisleep makes two firmer mattresses, the AS1 and AS2, which are suitable for side sleepers over 230 pounds. Back and stomach sleepers over 230 pounds may have more success with the hybrid versions of the AS1 or AS2.
Is the Amerisleep AS3 Good for Couples?
The Amerisleep isolates motion and makes virtually no noise, which is an advantage for couples. If you and your partner both weigh less than 230 pounds and prefer sleeping on your back or side, then this mattress is a viable option for you.
The mattress is fairly temperature-neutral and easy to move around in. One thing to note is the weak edge support, which can reduce the amount of usable space in the mattress.
Overall, this is a fine choice for couples if the bed matches your sleep needs in general. If you’re a particularly sensitive sleeper or you value having a bouncy mattress for sex, then you may prefer a mattress that rates more highly in these categories.
