Sleep Doctor’s Take: Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding is a proven brand in the mattress industry, and the Signature Mattress is a leading model, thanks to the quality materials in its multilayered hybrid design. With three firmness options to pick from and an affordable price-point, this mattress is a compelling choice for people who want all-around performance and value.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress: An Introduction

Founded in 1995, Brooklyn Bedding has been making mattresses for over 25 years. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress is one of their flagship products. This hybrid mattress, which is available in three different firmness options, combines the traditional bounce of an innerspring mattress with the comfort and support of foam comfort layers.

We’ll cover all the key details about the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress, including how it feels to sleep on, how it performed during our in-house testing, and where the mattress can be purchased.

We also reviewed the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, a higher end model from the same brand.

How We Review

We applied a rigorous testing methodology to evaluate the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress across a range of performance categories. This analysis can help in the process of choosing the best mattress for you. In our sleep lab, our team of side, back, and stomach sleepers of different weights shared their feedback to create the most useful review for all types of sleepers.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress?

The foam layers and cotton quilting in the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress provide good cushioning and support for a wide variety of sleepers. The thick coil layer balances out the softness by offering significant bounce and stability.

The sleeping experience on this mattress varies depending on which firmness option you select. The softer the model, the greater the amount of contouring and cushioning, while the firmest option provides more bounce and ease of movement. On any model, an optional pillow-top adds a bit of softness along with a material engineered to cut down on heat buildup.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Multiple firmness choices to suit different needs
  • Available in specialty sizes, including RV sizes
  • Provides a blend of pressure relief and bounce that can suit a wide range of sleepers

Cons

  • Thinner foam layers do not have deep contouring
  • A return shipping fee is deducted from refunds
  • Reduced motion isolation on the firm (8) model

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid provides three firmness options, making it appealing to many different types of sleepers. When looking for a mattress, it’s important to consider your personal preferences as well as your body weight, sleep position, and whether you experience back pain

We use a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. On this scale, the Soft version of the Signature Hybrid is a medium soft (4), the Medium model is a medium (5), and the Firm model is a firm (8).

Our testing team found that each model’s performance rated differently based on sleeping position and body weight.

Signature Mattress – Soft

Firmness: Medium Soft (4)

Firmness: Medium Firm (6)

Under 130 lbs.130-230 lbs.Over 230 lbs.

Signature Mattress – Firm

Firmness: Firm (8)

Under 130 lbs.130-230 lbs.Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers2/53/53/5
Back Sleepers3/54/55/5
Stomach Sleepers2/55/55/5

Side Sleepers

Both the medium soft (4) and medium firm (6) versions of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid performed well for side sleepers who need cushioning around key pressure points like the hips and shoulders. For our testers, the cushioning from the top layers provided enough pressure relief to facilitate spinal alignment. The medium soft (4) option was best for sleepers under 130 pounds, and the medium firm (6) performed best for people between 130 and 230 pounds. Side sleepers over 230 felt that all three models performed about as well as other hybrid mattresses.

Back Sleepers

Our back sleepers generally preferred the medium firm (6) and firm (8) models, which provided plenty of stable support for the lower back without permitting excess sinking into the mattress. However, back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds preferred the medium soft (4) option. The medium firm (6) model was optimal for people between 130 and 230 pounds, and the firm (8) was the top choice for those over 230 pounds.

Stomach Sleepers

In our tests, stomach sleepers reported that they got the best support from the firm (8) model of the Signature Hybrid. Stomach sleepers need a sleep surface with less sinkage and hug so that their midsection and spine stay relatively flat. With its firmer feel and significant support, the firm (8) model provided dependable comfort, especially for sleepers over 130 pounds. For stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, the medium firm (6) version of the Signature Mattress delivered a better blend of support and comfort.

Our Performance Ratings

To evaluate how the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress performs, we conducted thorough tests in our sleep laboratory. Our diverse group of testers compiled both subjective and objective analyses to rate the mattress in eight key performance areas.

Our team used a 5-point scale, with a rating of 1 indicating poor performance and 5 reflecting excellent performance. In some cases, performance in a particular category differed among the three models of the Signature Hybrid Mattress.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5

All firmness options of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid models demonstrated strong pressure relief in our testing. The mattress provides a cushioned surface that relieves pressure with light contouring while still resisting dramatic sinkage that could pull the spine out of alignment.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 3/5 (Soft), 4/5 (Medium, Firm)

Our tests showed that the Signature Hybrid maintains a comfortable temperature, but the medium firm (6) and firm (8) versions stayed a little cooler. This is likely because they hug the body less, which enables better airflow. In all the models, however, the pocketed coil support core facilitates ventilation that limits heat buildup.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5 (Soft, Medium), 3/5 (Firm)

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress is highly effective at isolating motion in the medium soft (4) and medium firm (6) models. Our testing found that these models were able to prevent vibrations from spreading across the mattress when one person moved around on the other side. However, the firm (8) model, which has more bounce and less contouring, was somewhat below average in isolating motion. The ability to prevent motion transfer is generally most important to couples or people who share their bed with a pet.

Edge Support

Rating: 3/5 (Soft/Medium), 4/5 (Firm)

The reinforced coils in the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid’s support core provide side-to-side edge support for all models. On the softer models, the foam sinks in a bit more when you sit or sleep near the bed’s perimeter. The firm (8) model scored well above average and offered a stable base of perimeter support for the testers in our lab.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is constructed with high-quality foam layers and steel coils that make for considerable durability. While the exact lifespan of this mattress can vary based on how it is used and maintained, we expect the Signature Hybrid to last for a similar amount of time as most hybrid mattresses.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 3/5 (Soft), 4/5 (Medium, Firm)

Being able to move freely on a mattress can be helpful for those who shift sleep positions during the night, as well as those with mobility issues. With its notable bounce and responsive polyfoam layers, the firm (8) model of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is extremely easy to move on. The medium firm (6) and medium soft (4) models have softer top layers that add contouring and hug, which can lightly impede movement on the bed.

Sex

Rating: 3/5 (Soft), 4/5 (Medium/Firm)

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a solid option for people who prioritize a mattress that is good for sex. The thick layer of reinforced and pocketed coils generates a bouncy surface that is conducive to sexual activity, and the thin polyfoam base can dampen noise from the coils. The softer top layers add comfort as well, although the medium soft (4) model may slightly hinder movement because of its plusher surface.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

Off-gassing refers to the emission of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, when a mattress is first unwrapped. VOCs are generally considered harmless, but the smell may be unpleasant. We found that the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid produces very little off-gassing regardless of the model. However, those who are sensitive to odors may want to set up the mattress in a well-ventilated area to help the off-gassing smell dissipate more quickly.

What Is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress’ design includes layers of cotton, polyfoam, and coils. The top layer is a breathable cover made of quilted cotton that is either 1 inch or 1.5 inches thick, depending on the model.

The second layer is made of responsive and supportive polyfoam that can cushion pressure points while retaining plenty of bounce. Below that, a layer of transitional polyfoam prevents excess sagging or sinking into the mattress.

The support core is made of an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils that sits on top of a .25-inch polyfoam base. The coils provide springiness and edge support to the mattress, and the foam base adds stability and reduces sound from the coils.

The optional pillow-top adds about 2 inches of extra padding and includes fibers that are designed to prevent heat buildup.

How Much Does the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress Cost?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress provides excellent value because of its high-performance construction and competitive price-point. All three firmness models have the same price, which includes free shipping. Pricing depends on the mattress size and whether you choose to add the optional pillow-top.

In addition to the standard mattress sizes, Brooklyn Bedding offers the Signature Mattress in various hard-to-find sizes that can be especially appealing for people who need an RV mattress.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress FAQ

Should you get the cooling pillow-top for the Brooklyn Bedding Signature?

Hot sleepers who want a mattress with extra temperature regulation features should consider the pillow-top option, which includes GlacioTex material designed to resist heat buildup during the night. That said, even without the pillow-top, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid performed well in our tests of temperature regulation, especially the medium firm (6) and firm (8) models.

Is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature good for combination sleepers?

The medium firm (6) model of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress is a good option for most combination sleepers. With its mix of comfort and support, the medium firm version can accommodate multiple sleeping positions. It can also reduce motion isolation, so sleepers are less likely to bother their bed partner when changing positions.

The medium soft (4) and firm (7) options are less likely to be a good fit for combination sleepers since their constructions don’t suit as wide a variety of sleeping positions.

Where is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress made?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress is made in Brooklyn Bedding’s mattress factory in Phoenix, Arizona.

Does the Brooklyn Bedding Signature need a box spring?

You should use some type of support for the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Mattress, but it doesn’t have to be a box spring. Other options include a platform or slat foundation that is stable and has limited or no flexion.
