If you snooze better when traveling than you do in your own home, it’s time to give your bedroom a hotel-style makeover.

Top resorts rely on smart strategies to ensure their guests experience a relaxing vacation, and many of those tricks relate directly to their customers’ sleeping rooms. Quality hotels tend to feature beds with simple, neat duvets, supportive mattresses and pillows, personalized temperature control systems, and a conspicuous absence of clutter. With a few minor tweaks, you can follow their lead to make your sleeping space at home more restful.

Upgrade Your Mattress
If your bed is sagging or lumpy, it may be time to invest in a new plush-top or pillow-top mattress like major hotel chains offer. For additional comfort, purchase a new feather, down or hypoallergenic pillow—proper head support sets you up for a better night’s sleep no matter where you are. The thickness and firmness of the optimal pillow for you depends on your usual sleep position and personal preferences.

Try New Colors
Harness the power of cool colors that create a relaxing environment by painting your bedroom walls a tranquil hue such as violet, gray, light blue or pale green. Or, add throw pillows and other accents in these quieter shades to give your sleeping space a sense of quiet calmness.

Purchase a few for your room or enlarge and frame some of your favorite vacation photos of tranquil beaches, mountainscapes, and hiking trails.
