Avocado Pillow Review

Avocado, a competitor in the green mattress market, was founded in 2016 with a focus on creating eco-friendly products that utilize organic, all natural materials. The company primarily manufactures mattresses and bedding. Their pillow lineup includes two full sized pillow models and several specialty pillows, such as meditation, mini, and toddler pillows. Their flagship pillow is the Avocado Green Pillow, which will be our primary focus.

The Avocado Green Pillow is filled with a blend of GOLS organic latex and GOTS organic kapok to create a medium-plush feel. The pillow’s loft is adjustable, and the pillow is enclosed in a jersey cotton liner and covered by a quilted cotton pillow case. It rates medium on the firmness scale and is available in standard, queen, and king sizes.

Avocado’s other full size pillow option, the Avocado Molded Latex Pillow, is distinct from the Avocado Green Pillow primarily in its filling, which is molded from a charcoal-infused latex core. This pillow is substantially firmer and moderately more expensive than the Avocado Green Pillow. We’ll examine the Avocado Green Pillow, offering insight into how it compares to other pillow models in areas such as construction, material make-up, and cost. We’ll cover who the Avocado Green Pillow is most suitable for, and highlight Avocado’s shipping, warranty, and return policies.

Avocado Pillow Review: Our Verdict

The Avocado Green Pillow is an excellent choice for back or side sleepers who prefer a softer yet supportive pillow with an adjustable loft, allowing them to add or remove fill until they reach their desired comfort level.

Made with a blended fill of both organic latex and organic kapok fibers, it achieves a fluffy yet medium plushness that allows the owner to easily adjust the loft of the pillow. For hot sleepers, the 100% cotton case is both moisture wicking and breathable, which helps dissipate heat.

The Avocado Green Pillow is a great choice for vegan or environmentally conscious buyers. The cotton casing and fill materials used by Avocado meet several strict certifications such as GOLS and GOTS. The latex fill is also eco-INSTITUT certified, ensuring that it is free of dangerous emissions and synthetic materials. How Much Is the Avocado Pillow?

The Avocado Green Pillow is priced similarly to other top competitors, hovering on the slightly lower end of the pricing scale relative to those who offer a similar pillow. Since latex and Kapok fibers tend to be on the more expensive side of fill materials, the price of the Avocado Green Pillow is a good value considering the quality of the materials.

Standard 19" x 25" $89

How Does the Avocado Pillow Feel?

The latex-Kapok blend in the Avocado Green Pillow provides a medium-plush fill that feels supportive without being exceptionally firm. Its adjustable fill and the springiness of the latex excell at pressure relief. The Avocado Green Pillow’s construction makes it very breathable, combining its cooling properties and its conforming ability to appeal to hot sleepers who enjoy similarly conforming pillows such as those made from memory foam.

What Is the Avocado Pillow Made of?

The Avocado Pillow has two main components, the filling and the cover.

Cover Material

The cover of the Avocado Green Pillow is made of a 100% GOTS certified organic quilted cotton. Cotton is naturally breathable and moisture wicking, and the cotton Avocado uses holds the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, ensuring it is free of potentially harmful substances.

The cover features a zipper that opens to reveal an organic jersey cotton liner that contains the latex and kapok fill. The zipper allows you to machine wash the quilted cotton pillow case as often as you like without having to worry about damaging the filling.

Fill Material

The fill is composed of two materials, GOLS certified organic latex and GOTS certified organic Kapok fibers. The latex is cut into ribbons, which gives the pillow its structure and support. The Kapok is derived from the ceiba tree, and is often used as a vegan substitute for down as it is both hypoallergenic and biodegradable. Owners can remove and rearrange the fill in order to adjust the loft, firmness, and shape of the pillow. The pillow also comes with an extra bag of fill, intended to allow you to customize the amount of fill to your optimal level. Additional refill packages are available as well, in both half-pound and 1-pound sizes.

How Well Does It Relieve Pressure?

Rating: 5/5

A pillow's ability to relieve pressure is closely related to how well it can shape to the contours of your head and neck while you sleep. Providing pressure relief is crucial, as it can prevent next-day aches.

The Avocado Green Pillow offers a very close contour, hugging your head and neck while you sleep. The pillow is partially filled with latex, a resilient material often compared to memory foam, as well as kapok fibers, which feel very similar to down. Together, these create a medium plush feel that does a good job relieving pressure and preventing neck aches and pains.

How Cool Does It Sleep?

Rating: 4/5

The Avocado Green Pillow functions very well at keeping you cool while you sleep. Because the pillow uses a 100% cotton pillow case, the fabric is both moisture-wicking and breathable, dissipating heat that might otherwise become trapped.

The fill materials of latex and Kapok fibers also assist in keeping you cool at night. Since the fill is shredded, it allows airflow to circulate through the pillow. This helps dissipate heat, instead of trapping it in the pillow, as often occurs with other similarly conforming pillows, such as those made with memory foam.

Will It Hold Its Shape?

Rating: 3/5

The Avocado Green Pillow does not hold its shape as well as other pillows on the market, such as those that are made of solid pieces of latex or memory foam. This is because the shredded construction of the fill allows the fill materials to move and compress over time and use.

However, the fill of the Avocado Green Pillow can be easily accessed via a zipper, allowing the owner to add or remove fill as needed to achieve their preferred loft level. Additionally, each pillow comes with a package of extra filling to extend the life of the pillow if it begins to flatten out. Avocado also sells individual packages of fill so that this process may be repeated.

How Moldable Is It?

Rating: 3/5

Moldability refers to the ability to change and rearrange the shape of a pillow. The Avocado Green Pillow performs well in this area, making it a good choice for those who like to cuddle their pillow or sleep with a pillow between the knees. While it is not as malleable as some other options on the market, it still offers a fair degree of flexibility in how the pillow can be shaped and adjusted. The Avocado Green Pillow’s moldability is comparable to some down pillows.

What About Off-Gassing and Other Odors?

Rating: 2/5

Off-gassing refers to the potential smells and gases emitted when a pillow or mattress is unpackaged. These emissions are referred to as VOCs (volatile organic compounds.)

Because the materials employed in the Avocado Green Pillow are certified to be all natural and organic, the off-gassing the pillow emits is relatively minor and harmless in nature. The pillow does employ latex in its filling, which is known to give off a noticeable rubber-like scent when first unboxed, but the smell tends to dissipate after the first couple days.

What Type of Sleeper Is the Pillow Best for?

Your preferred sleeping position, personal preferences, and body weight can impact the performance of different pillows.

Side Sleepers: As the most common sleep position, side sleepers need substantial loft and support in order to keep their spine in alignment and their head cradled, avoiding neck strain.

The Avocado Green Pillow performs very well for side sleepers, as side sleepers generally need a higher loft from their pillows in order to support their neck. The Avocado Green Pillow is a relatively lofty pillow, and allows for extreme adjustability, enabling it to suit a wide range of sleepers.

Combination Sleepers: While many people tend to favor a certain sleeping position, most people change positions at least a couple of times while they sleep. Combination sleepers include anyone who varies positions throughout the course of the night between back, side, and stomach.

If you are a back and side combination sleeper, then the Avocado Green Pillow would be an excellent choice, as it performs well for both those sleep positions. However, if you are a combination sleeper who often finds themselves switching to their stomach throughout the night, you might find this pillow slightly too lofty to comfortably adjust to a stomach position.

Back Sleepers: Back sleepers tend to need a medium loft in order to support their neck as they sleep. A loft that is too low allows the head to sink, forcing the neck to arch and potentially triggering neck and back pain. However, a loft that is too high can push the head out of alignment with the neck and back.

The Avocado Green Pillow performs very well for back sleepers since it is naturally a loftier pillow, which is enhanced by the ease of adjustment and customization to find your ideal support.

Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers’ preferences are distinctly different from those of back and side sleepers since the stomach position requires less support in order to keep the back, neck, and head in alignment. This means that stomach sleepers tend to prefer a flatter, less lofty pillow.

While the Avocado Green Pillow performed excellently for back and side sleepers, it was not as suitable for stomach sleepers. This is because when stomach sleepers adjusted the loft of the pillow to satisfaction by decreasing the fill, the liner was left considerably emptier, allowing the fill to clump in the leftover space.

How Does Body Weight Impact the Avocado Pillow’s Performance?

Each pillow is designed with a certain weight range in mind and using a pillow that is not suitable for you can impact your comfort. The Avocado Green Pillow is suitable for most sleeper types, but side and back sleepers under 230 pounds will benefit the most from the pillow’s medium firmness and blend of contouring and support. The pillow generally does not perform as well for stomach sleepers or those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

This is because the head and neck support of the pillow begins to diminish for those above 230 pounds, as the loft is impacted and heavier sleepers often prefer firmer pillows that can offer more support for the head and neck. The Avocado Molded Latex Pillow may be a more comfortable option for sleepers in this weight range, as it can provide sturdier support. However, firmness preferences are subjective, and personal preferences will play a role in determining the right pillow for you.
