How Does the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Mattress Feel?
Our testing team found that the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan felt very comfortable, supportive, and responsive in most sleep positions. It maintained a comfortably cool sleeping temperature, even for our testers who tend to sleep hot. The Spartan looks and feels like a luxury mattress, with a durable design and significant heft.
The Spartan’s hybrid design contributes greatly to its performance and overall feel. The thick layer of pocketed coils provides the deep compression support needed to keep the spine aligned properly. Three layers of advanced polyfoam materials help to relieve pressure on common problem areas. The Spartan’s unique cover offers a soft feel and a comfortable sleeping temperature.
The Far Infrared Rays technology utilized by this mattress is difficult to describe. The manufacturer claims that the technology helps enhance athletic recovery and recharge the body. While we didn’t specifically notice these properties, our testers did find that they slept very well on the mattress, and woke up feeling refreshed.
Keep in mind that the Spartan is available in three firmness levels: medium soft (4/10), medium firm (6/10) and firm (7-8/10). Your choice of firmness level will have a significant impact on the overall feel of this bed.
What Is the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Made Of?
The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan is a hybrid mattress. This means that it has both pocketed coils and comfort layers of foam.
The comfort system is made up of three distinct layers. The first is a 1.5-inch layer of CopperFlex, a copper-infused polyfoam that provides pressure relief in key areas, while also allowing the mattress to benefit from the antimicrobial and cooling properties of copper. The comfort layer also has a surface infusion of TitanCool phase change molecule technology, which helps maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature. Beneath that is a 2-inch layer of proprietary TitanFlex polyfoam that offers immediate responsiveness, adjusting to the movements of your body. Below that is a 1-inch transitional layer of dense memory foam that prevents the sleeper from coming into contact with the support core..
The Spartan’s support core consists of an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils resting on, and a 1-inch high-density polyfoam layer. The coils are individually wrapped in fabric, allowing them to move independently. This also reduces noise, and improves motion isolation, compared to traditional continuous coils.
An elite performance top, is perhaps the biggest selling point of the mattress. The Spartan’s cover uses Far Infrared Rays (FIR) technology to transform body heat into waves of energy. The manufacturer claims that the Spartan helps your body rejuvenate more rapidly by recycling the body’s natural energy during the sleep cycle.
FIR technology has not been fully researched in clinical trials. However, there is some evidence to suggest that it might be helpful in some applications. One study found that clothing utilizing Far Infrared Rays helped to reduce muscle soreness after intense exercise. A small study found that infrared saunas were helpful in speeding up muscle recovery after strength training. It’s unclear exactly how well this technology will work in a mattress, but anecdotally, reviewers have noted that it seems to help.
Keep in mind that there are three different firmness levels available on this mattress: medium soft (4/10), medium firm (6/10) and firm (7-8/10). The design of each version is the same, but the foam materials differ in their density and overall feel

What Type of Sleeper Is the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Mattress Best for?
The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan mattress is available in three firmness levels. This means that there is likely a version of the Spartan suited to nearly any type of sleeper – it’s just a matter of choosing the right option.
Side sleepers will likely be most comfortable on the soft or medium version of this mattress, depending on their weight and comfort preferences. Most side sleepers prefer softer beds, as they allow for the deep conforming needed to accommodate the hips and shoulders, while keeping the spine aligned. The firm version of this mattress will feel too firm for the vast majority of side sleepers.
The medium Spartan mattress is the most versatile option for anyone who sleeps in a variety of positions. Combination sleepers will want to choose a mattress that provides the right balance of support and conforming in order to feel comfortable in any sleep position.
Back sleepers will generally prefer either the medium or firm version of the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan. Sleepers over 230 pounds should likely choose the firm version to ensure adequate support, while sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds can choose between medium or firm, depending on their comfort preferences. The softest version of the Spartan will likely allow too much sinkage for back sleepers to feel comfortable and supportive for most back sleepers.
Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds found the soft version of the spartan very comfortable, while sleepers over 130 pounds found the firm version provided the support they needed for proper spinal alignment, but found that the medium and soft versions allowed for too much sagging that led to next-day aches and pains.
How Does Body Weight Impact the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan's Performance?
Sleepers under 130 pounds found that the soft and medium versions of the Spartan were most comfortable. Side sleepers in this category preferred the soft setting, while back and stomach sleepers sometimes preferred the medium version. Side sleepers often need extra cushioning around the shoulders and hips, to allow for proper spinal alignment.
Sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds mostly preferred the medium firmness option of the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan. The medium version offered the right blend of cushioning and support for this weight class. This category of sleeper can be well served by a wide variety of firmness levels, so it largely comes down to personal preference.
Sleepers over 230 pounds largely preferred the firm version of this mattress. The firm Spartan offered adequate conforming, without allowing the body to sink in too much. Some sleepers in this weight class found the medium version to be comfortable, as well. The soft version will almost always be too soft to adequately support sleepers in this category.
While the weight of the sleeper(s) is a notable factor in choosing a firmness level, it’s far from the only thing to consider. Sleep position preference is also key, as what feels comfortable to a side sleeper is notably different than what will be comfortable to a stomach sleeper.
Is the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Mattress Good for Couples?
The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan mattress is a good option for many couples. It scores well in the categories that are most important for those sharing their bed.
The Spartan offers good motion isolation, so your movements should not disturb your partner. It also sleeps cool, so couples need not worry about the bed getting too warm at night.
This mattress also performs well for sex. It offers good ease of movement, with minimal sinkage and a nicely responsive feel. We did note that the softest version of this bed did have significantly more sinkage, and may hamper movement a bit more.
Couples will need to closely consider their comfort preferences when choosing a firmness level for this mattress. For many, the medium version offers the most versatile choice, but it’s important to discuss this choice thoroughly with your partner.
