The Casper Essential is specifically intended to be a cost-effective option for people on a budget who still want a high-quality mattress. Introduced in October of 2017, it is Casper’s third mattress style.
The Essential is an all-foam mattress composed of open-celled polyfoam, visco-elastic memory foam, and polyurethane foam. It has a medium-firm feel and a soft, breathable polyester-knit cover.
Compared to the Casper Original or Wave mattresses, which have four layers with different types of foam, the Casper Essential is thinner and more lightweight, with only three foam layers. It is a great mattress for people who want a bed that offers support and comfort without breaking the bank.

How Does the Casper Essential Mattress Feel?
The Casper Essential is soft to the touch and provides the support and pressure relief of a foam mattress without sagging or sinking too deeply. It cradles the body snugly, but has enough bounce to be responsive and recover quickly.
What Is the Casper Essential Made Of?
In order to get down to the basics of the Casper Essential, it’s helpful to look inside and see what the mattress is actually made of.
The top cover of the Casper Essential is made of upholstery-grade, 100-percent knit polyester. It zips off and can be washed, and has a charcoal color that hides small spills or stains. The knit polyester is breathable, which helps keep the sleeping surface ventilated and prevents it from trapping too much heat.
Beneath the cover, there is a top comfort layer made of 2 inches of open-celled, latex-like polyfoam. As the foam is “open-celled,” it is designed to be breathable and to transfer heat away from the sleep surface. The comfort layer is soft, but very quick to respond, which gives a good deal of bounce to the bed and provides pressure relief.
Under the comfort layer is a transition layer made of 1.5 inches of visco-elastic memory foam. The memory foam has a slower response to pressure, but is still quick to recover when weight is removed. This provides additional pressure relief, while also giving the sleeper the memory foam feeling of “sinking in” without the pitfall of feeling stuck or swallowed up. Since the transition layer is deeper into the mattress and further away from the body than the comfort layer, the sleeper is also less likely to feel any heat retained by the memory foam.
The base of the mattress is composed of 7.5 inches of polyurethane foam. This support core forms the bed’s foundation and provides stability and support.
Does the Casper Essential Isolate Motion?
The Casper Essential does a great job at isolating motion.
Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress keeps motion happening on one part of the bed from being felt by a person on another part of the bed. A mattress with good motion isolation is particularly important for couples, especially if one or both people are light sleepers.
The Casper Essential’s dual-foam comfort layer provides a balanced combination of sinkage and support to prevent motion transference. Though some people have reported being able to feel a small amount of motion from one part of the bed to another, the mattress rates better than average in the motion isolation department.
Does the Casper Essential Sleep Cool?
For an all-foam mattress, the Casper Essential is able to disperse heat well.
Foam mattresses generally tend to trap more heat than other types of mattresses. However, the Casper Essential’s relatively small number of foam layers, as well as the open-celled construction of the comfort layer, helps the mattress sleep cooler than other all-foam mattresses in its class. In addition, the comfort layer lies between the body and the transition layer of memory foam, which provides the “memory foam feel” without the same amount of heat retention that memory foam tends to have.
The Casper Essential is ultimately an all-foam mattress, with no specific cooling technologies like gel layers, so there will be some heat retention. However, unless you are a pretty hot sleeper (in which case, you should invest in a cooling-specific mattress), the Casper Essential should sleep cool enough to keep you comfortable.
Will It Sag Along the Edges?
The Casper essential provides fairly good edge support.
Edge support refers to how well the edges of the mattress will support your weight, either while sitting down or lying down on the mattress edge. Edge support is especially important for people who want to utilize all of the surface area of their bed (including couples), and people who tend to spend time sitting on the edge of their bed.
The edges of the Casper Essential do sag slightly under the full weight of a person, especially while sitting, but provide enough support such that most people won’t feel that they’re falling off the side.
Is It Good for Sex?
The Casper Essential is generally suitable for sex.
Because the Essential has a good mix of bounce and support, it avoids “sinking” the participants too far into the mattress. This allows for free range of motion during sex. It also provides pressure relief, which can facilitate different positions, and is silent, which allows for discretion. The main issues with the Essential when it comes to sex are the fact that it is lightweight (and therefore may move/not stay firmly planted during sex), and the issues with slight edge sagging, which may inhibit positions involving the edges of the bed. Otherwise, though, the Essential is a good mattress for sex.
What About Off-gassing?
The Casper Essential, like all Casper mattresses, does tend to slightly “off-gas” a chemical smell when it is first unpacked from the box. However, the Essential has not been reported to have a particularly bad off-gassing problem when compared to other all-foam bed-in-a-box mattresses. According to reviews, the smell typically dissipates within a few hours and doesn’t linger on noticeably.
What Type of Sleeper Is the Casper Essential Mattress Best for?
Every mattress is different, with unique advantages and disadvantages for different types of sleepers. The Casper Essential is no exception. In general, this mattress is best for side sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds, though it also performs highly for back sleepers and stomach sleepers.
- Side Sleepers: The Casper Essential performs the best for side sleepers. The interplay between the comfort layer and the memory foam transition layer provides excellent pressure relief and support for the shoulders and hips, which is especially important for people who sleep on their sides.
- Combination Sleepers: This mattress is also recommended for back sleepers. The measured amount of sink (without feeling trapped or immobilized) cradles the hips and provides lumbar support. The foam base layer also keeps the spine in alignment, which prevents back pain and soreness for back sleepers.
- Back Sleepers: The Casper Essential works fine for some stomach sleepers. However, because it is on the softer side of medium-firm, some stomach sleepers, especially those who are physically larger, may find that the mattress doesn’t offer enough hip support or spinal alignment support to be comfortable in a stomach-sleeping position. If you’re a stomach sleeper and generally prefer a firmer mattress, the Casper Essential may not be the right match.
How Does Body Weight Impact the Casper Essential Mattress' Performance?
The Casper Essential is generally comfortable for anyone under approximately 230 lbs, especially if they are side or back sleepers.
By and large, the Casper Essential is not recommended for anyone over 230 lbs, especially if they are not strictly side sleepers. This is because of a number of factors that have to do with how the mattress is constructed. The comfort and transition layers are relatively lightweight and thin, so a heavier person may press past them and feel more of the harder foundation layer. This may be uncomfortable, and may not provide the pressure relief and spinal support necessary for a good night’s sleep. In addition, heavier people may experience “hollowing out” or disproportionate sinkage on the Casper Essential, which would cause further support issues. The Casper Essential is especially not recommended for heavier people who sleep on their stomachs, as they require even more support that the mattress may not be able to offer.
Casper does offer a mattress that is recommended for heavier people: The Wave. Though it is not as budget-friendly as the Essential, the Wave is built specifically with support and pressure relief in mind, and it is designed to accommodate people with larger frames.
Is the Casper Essential Mattress Good for Couples?
The Casper Essential is a good choice for couples. This is true for several reasons.
- Motion Isolation: The Essential does a great job at isolating motion, which is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a mattress as a couple. Anyone who is a light sleeper and/or has a partner that moves around at night will tell you that good motion isolation is key to getting a good night of uninterrupted sleep. The Casper Essential performs well in that category.
- Sufficient Edge Support: People who co-sleep with their partners often want to make the most out of the surface area of their mattress, which means that sometimes they may find themselves quite close to the mattress edge. Though the Essential does have some issues with edge support when a person is seated on the edge of the bed, it tends to hold up well under the weight of a person sleeping near the edge of the bed.
- Good for Sex: In addition to being good for sleep, most couples will want to consider how well a mattress holds up when it comes to sex. As mentioned above, the Essential is good for sex. It provides enough bounce to allow for free range of motion and enough support to accommodate various positions, with the added bonus of being quiet for discretion.
