Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Review

Casper is one of the most popular online mattress companies in the U.S. This review will focus on the Nova Hybrid, a model Casper introduced in early 2020.

The Nova Hybrid is constructed with two comfort layers of plush AirScape open-cell polyfoam. The second AirScape layer is divided into three firmness zones, resulting in targeted support for the lower back and hips and softer cradling for other areas of the body. The transitional layer, made from memory foam, is also divided into seven firmness zones.

The Nova Hybrid's support core contains foam-encased pocketed coils. The entire mattress is wrapped in a cover made from a fabric blend that contains recycled materials. Altogether, the Nova Hybrid measures 12 inches thick and has a medium soft feel that corresponds to a 4 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Casper also offers an all-foam version of the Nova that swaps out the pocketed coils for a base layer of high-density polyfoam; its cover, comfort layer, and transitional layer materials are identical to the Nova Hybrid's. However, unlike its hybrid counterpart, the all-foam Nova cannot be purchased directly from Casper and is only available through select third-party retailers such as Target and Walmart.

This review will focus solely on the Casper Nova Hybrid. We’ve highlighted everything you need to know about this mattress in terms of construction and materials, prices and sizes, and performance ratings. We've also included a rundown of Casper's shipping, return, and delivery policies.

Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Review: Our Verdict

The Nova Hybrid conforms very closely to support the spine and alleviate pressure points. You'll sink deeply beneath the surface as the plush comfort foam molds to your body, which may be beneficial if you weigh 230 pounds or less and/or sleep on your side. However, back and stomach sleepers – particularly those who weigh more than 230 pounds – will likely find the mattress too soft.

Other strengths of the Nova Hybrid include excellent motion isolation and consistent temperature neutrality. However, the mattress may sink a bit too much around the edges, which makes getting in and out of bed difficult for some people. The Nova Hybrid is one of Casper's softest mattresses, so you should research other models from this brand – such as the Casper Original or Casper Hybrid – if you want a firmer feel for your bed.

How Much Is the Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress?

The Nova Hybrid’s price-point is on par with the average high-end hybrid. For other models you can buy directly from Casper, this price-point is middle-of-the-road. You'll pay a bit more for the Wave Hybrid, but less for the Element, Casper Original, or Casper Hybrid.

How Does the Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Feel?

The Nova Hybrid has a medium soft feel. Most people will sink beneath the surface and experience a deep, pressure-relieving cradle around their entire body. Many liken this sensation to sleeping "in" – not "on" – the mattress. The Nova Hybrid's coils also create a bit more responsiveness that results in a light bounce on the surface.

Some people benefit from a softer mattress. These include side sleepers who need extra padding for their shoulders and hips for even spinal alignment, as well as people under 130 pounds who prefer close body-contouring from their bed. Other people, such as back and stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, may find the mattress unsupportive and prone to uncomfortable sagging.

What Is the Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Made Of?

Cover Material

The top portion of the Nova Hybrid's cover is made from a blend of recycled polyester/polyester, cotton, rayon, and spandex. The fabric has a very soft and stretchy feel, and also feels breathable thanks to the cotton and rayon. According to Casper, one Nova Hybrid cover may contain up to 70 recycled bottles.

Comfort Layers

The Nova Hybrid has two comfort layers made from AirScape open-cell polyfoam. The foam is very plush, giving the surface a medium soft feel. The open-cell structure also makes the foam breathable, so it won't absorb much body heat and should sleep fairly cool.

The second AirScape layer is divided into three firmness zones, creating a moderate feel for the head and neck, enhanced support for the back and hips, and light cradling for the legs. The Nova Hybrid also has a transitional memory foam layer divided into seven firmness levels for additional zoned support.

Support Core

The Nova Hybrid's support core contains pocketed coils encased in high-density polyfoam. You'll still feel some sinkage along the edges, but the foam-encased coils offer good overall stability for the mattress. The coils also promote steady air circulation to regulate the bed's temperature.

Does the Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Isolate Motion?

Rating: 4/5

The Nova Hybrid offers very good motion isolation. The plush comfort foam absorbs movement from sleepers and prevents motion from transferring across the surface. This can cut down on nighttime disruptions for couples by a significant extent. If you share your bed with someone, there's a good chance you'll both sleep more soundly on this mattress. Many competing hybrids feel more responsive due to their firmer surface feels and springier coil systems.

Does the Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Sleep Cool?

Rating: 4/5
The Nova Hybrid provides decent temperature neutrality thanks to its comfort layers of open-cell polyfoam. This material is breathable and will not absorb too much body heat. The coil system also allows air to flow throughout the interior, which helps the entire bed maintain a comfortable temperature. However, people who weigh more than 230 pounds will sink more beneath the surface, and this can cause them to feel excessively warm.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating: 3/5

The Nova Hybrid offers good edge support due to its pocketed coils encased in high-density foam. You'll feel a bit of sinkage when getting in and out of bed or sleeping near the edges, but the foam-encased coils prevent you from sagging too deeply. That said, many competing hybrids provide better edge support because they feel firmer and have thicker coils.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating: 3/5

Every couple has particular preferences about the best mattress for sex, but most seem to enjoy bouncier surfaces that do not restrict movement. The Nova Hybrid may not be ideal for these couples. The bed sinks quite a bit beneath your body, so you and your partner should expect some resistance when trying to move across the surface or switch positions. Edge support may also be an issue. Sinkage along the perimeter means you may not be able to utilize the bed's entire surface.

That said, the mattress offers decent traction. Many couples find this enhances sex. The Nova Hybrid is fairly quiet as well, so you won't need to worry about someone hearing your mattress squeak in the next room.

What About Off-gassing?

Rating: 3/5

When unboxing the Nova Hybrid, you'll probably notice some initial off-gassing odor from the mattress, but the coil system should help to clear out bothersome smells somewhat quickly. Expect most odors to dissipate within a few days of unboxing the mattress. Off-gassing is common for beds with polyfoam and/or memory foam layers. More importantly, off-gassing does not pose any major health risks – but as many can attest, the chemical smells can be unpleasant.

What Type of Sleeper Is the Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Best for?

  • Side Sleepers: For many side sleepers, the Nova Hybrid will offer the perfect amount of body-contouring. This sleep position – unlike back sleeping – does not promote spinal alignment as readily, and this can lead to pressure points throughout the body. Beds that conform closely to cushion the shoulders and hips can improve your alignment and alleviate pressure in the process.
  • Combination Sleepers: If you're a combo sleeper who sometimes rests on your stomach, then there's a good chance the Nova Hybrid will sag too much. This is a common problem for stomach sleepers on soft mattresses; the weight from their midsection pulls the rest of their body beneath the surface. Over time, this can cause neck, shoulder, back, and hip pain. If you are a back and side combination sleeper, then you'll probably feel much more comfortable, provided you weigh 230 pounds or less (see next section for details).
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers tend to prefer a mid-level feel, usually between medium soft and medium firm. This ensures they'll experience comfortable body-conforming without sinking too much around the waist and hips. Since the Nova Hybrid is medium soft, the mattress should appeal to back sleepers who prefer more conforming.

How Does Body Weight Impact the Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress's Performance?

Due to its medium soft feel, the Nova Hybrid is best suited to people who weigh 230 pounds or less. You'll sink quite a bit beneath the surface and feel deep body-contouring. Many people enjoy this sensation, especially if they sleep on their side and/or frequently deal with pressure points along their spine. Others find close body-contouring excessively warm and a bit claustrophobic. If the latter applies to you, consider a firmer Casper Mattress or Casper Hybrid instead.

People who weigh more than 230 pounds may feel less comfortable on the Nova Hybrid. Beds on the softer side can be problematic for people in this weight group because they sink excessively. Aches and pains often follow. Edge support is another potential issue. Most people will notice some sinkage when sitting or lying along the perimeter of either mattress, but those who weigh more than 230 pounds may have a more difficult time getting in and out of bed. The Nova Hybrid offers decent edge support, but these individuals may feel more comfortable on a hybrid model with a firmer feel.

Is the Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Good for Couples?

In terms of being couple-friendly, the Nova Hybrid has strengths and weaknesses. First, the good: the mattress offers above-average motion isolation. You and your co-sleeper will not notice much in the way of movements transferring across the surface when one of you shifts positions or gets up in the middle of the night. The mattress is relatively quiet, as well. The two of you probably won't need to worry about sleep disruptions from movement or noise with this model.

Unfortunately, the lack of edge support may be an issue. The Nova Hybrid provides some edge support, but the mattress will still sink to a noticeable extent. This may prevent you and your partner from sleeping near the edges and force both of you closer to the center. And as we've discussed above, the Nova Hybrid does not offer very much responsiveness for sex.
