Idle Gel Plush Mattress Review: Our Verdict

The Idle Gel Plush mattress stands out for its pressure-relieving capabilities, which make it an attractive choice for side sleepers and people under 130 pounds. Sensitive sleepers should find that motion transfer and noise are virtually non-existent due to the thick foam layers. Idle Sleep is also one of few companies to offer such a generous sleep trial, giving customers 18 months to try out the mattress in the comfort of their own homes.

The downside of having such close-contouring foams is that the mattress lacks edge support and responsiveness, and it is prone to heat buildup. The all-foam Idle mattress offers a slightly firmer sleep surface and better temperature neutrality, at an affordable price-point to boot.

Sleepers who prefer a bouncier, less conforming sleep surface may be interested in the Idle Hybrid or Idle Latex Hybrid mattresses. These mattresses offer better support for stomach sleepers and sleepers over 230 pounds. The Idle Latex Hybrids have the added advantage of being sustainably made, although this commitment to the environment comes with a higher price tag.

Choose the Idle Gel Plush if…

  • You weigh less than 230 pounds and sleep primarily on your side or back
  • You prefer extra pressure relief and the feel of sleeping in, rather than on, your mattress
  • You tend to wake easily from your partner’s movements
  • You’d like more time to test out the mattress at home

Keep Shopping if…

  • You’re a stomach or back sleeper over 230 pounds
  • You dislike the feeling of sinking into your mattress
  • You tend to sleep hot

How Much Is the Idle Gel Plush Mattress?

The Idle Gel Plush is one of Idle Sleep’s more affordable options. Generally, all-foam mattresses tend to be the most affordable models on the market. While this mattress is priced slightly higher than average, the price is justified given the extra layers of specialty foams that place it in the luxury all-foam category.

It should be mentioned that, unlike Idle’s hybrid mattresses, the Idle Gel Plush mattress is not flippable. However, the mattress does come with a generous warranty that should protect customers against premature sagging or body indentations.

How Does the Idle Plush Mattress Feel?

The Idle Gel Plush mattress has a medium firmness level, equivalent to a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is considered on the softer end but still within the range that appeals to most sleepers.

Multiple layers of plush, conforming foams allow sleepers to sink into the mattress, an effect that is sometimes described as sleeping “in” as opposed to sleeping “on” the mattress. The mattress contours closely to the sleeper’s body, providing enhanced pressure relief for side sleepers and people under 130 pounds. The high-density polyfoam core provides a sturdy base layer to encourage proper spinal alignment.

Stomach sleepers and those who weigh more than 230 pounds may find that the mattress sags in certain areas. These individuals generally need the extra support that comes from a firmer surface and an innerspring or a latex core.

What is the Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress Made of?

The Idle Sleep Gel Plush mattress consists of a quilted cover and several layers of cushioning foams over a high-density polyfoam support core. With a 14-inch profile, the Idle Gel Plush mattress is taller than most foam mattresses. Shoppers may need to purchase deep pocket fitted sheets.

Cover Material

The Idle Plush mattress is made of cooling Ice Fabric and quilted with 1 inch of gel-infused Cooling Buoyancy foam, designed to provide responsive pressure relief while helping to keep the sleeper cool. This is followed by a chemical-free cotton fire barrier.

Comfort Layers

The next layer contains another 2 inches of gel-infused polyfoam, followed by 3 inches of memory foam for deep pressure relief. Both foams help reduce heat buildup and respond quickly to pressure to prevent the feeling of being stuck in the bed.

Support Core

The Idle Gel Plush mattress has a base layer made of high-density polyfoam. This layer stands at 8 inches tall, which is thicker than most competing mattresses. The base cover can be unzipped and cleaned as needed.

Does it Isolate Motion?

Rating 5/5

The Idle Gel Plush provides best-in-class motion isolation. Thick, plush comfort layers surround the sleeper, conforming closely to prevent movement from traveling across the bed. The solid high-density polyfoam base layer further absorbs movement to eliminate nighttime disruptions. Strong motion isolation is a plus for couples, as it allows each partner to move freely without waking up the other person.

Does it Sleep Cool?

Rating 2/5

Some sleepers may experience excessive heat buildup while sleeping on the Idle Gel Plush. Despite the gel infusions that are designed to draw heat away from the sleeper, the Idle Gel Plush is still an all-foam mattress with limited room for airflow. Due to its relatively plush firmness, sleepers sink into the mattress and leave little room around the body for heat to escape.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating 2/5

The Idle Gel Plus mattress compresses considerably around the perimeter, which is typical of most all-foam mattresses. The mattress has a thick comfort system, with plush foams that compress easily under pressure. The base layer does hold up better, but overall the mattress provides insufficient stability for sleeping near the edge of the bed.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating 2/5

Couples may find that the Idle Gel Plush mattress is not bouncy enough for sex. The close-conforming foams restrict movement, and the mattress lacks the responsiveness of an innerspring or latex mattress. The weak edge support further limits positioning.

That said, couples who prefer a bit of traction should find they have no trouble staying in place on the Idle Gel Plush mattress. The mattress is also virtually silent when bearing weight

What About Off-gassing?

Rating 3/5

The Idle Gel Plush mattress may emit a faint odor when it’s first unboxed. This off-gassing smell is the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) being released into the air. It’s a normal process that happens with almost every mattress that contains synthetic foams.

Most customers find the off-gassing smells only linger for a day or two. The Idle Gel Plush mattress is made from foams that are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they are low in VOCs and free of harmful chemicals.

What Type of Sleeper is the Idle Sleep Gel Plush Mattress Best For?

The Idle Gel Plush mattress is primarily suited to side and back sleepers under 230 pounds, although it may be acceptable for other sleepers depending on their body type and personal preference.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers of all body types experience top-notch pressure relief while sleeping on the Idle Gel Plush mattress. In this position, it’s common to experience aches and pains where the hips and shoulders dig into the mattress. The Idle Gel Plush mattress combats this effect by wrapping closely around the shape of the body to prevent pressure build-up. This close conforming also helps with spinal alignment, especially for side sleepers under 230 pounds.

Combination Sleepers

Movement is somewhat restricted on the Idle Gel Plush due to the tight contouring. This may make it difficult to switch positions. Moreover, combination sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may experience some sagging under the hips when sleeping on the stomach. This can throw off spinal alignment and cause discomfort. The Idle Hybrid or Idle Latex Hybrid mattresses offer more responsiveness and firmer surfaces, and are better-suited to combination sleepers as a result.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers typically do best with a medium firm mattress that supports the lumbar area while providing some pressure relief. The Idle Gel Plush has an ideal firmness level for back sleepers under 130 pounds, and should provide sufficient support for back sleepers under 230 pounds as well. Those who weigh more than 230 pounds may prefer the additional lumbar support of the Idle Hybrid or Idle Latex Hybrid.

Stomach Sleepers

Most stomach sleepers, especially those over 130 pounds, will find the Idle Gel Plush to be a bit too soft. Due to the soft, close-conforming comfort layers, this mattress may not be able to support the midsection of stomach sleepers enough, leading to spinal misalignment.

How Does Body Weight Impact Performance?

The Idle Gel Plush mattress is rated as having a medium firmness level, but the overall feel may vary from person to person depending on body weight.

Those who weigh less than 130 pounds often find mattresses to be too firm, causing pressure points at contact spots. With its soft, pressure-relieving foams, Idle Gel Plush mattress remedies this problem. Though these individuals don’t sink as far into the mattress, the mattress still provides excellent pressure relief when lying on the back or side, and decent spinal support when stomach sleeping.

The Idle Gel Plush is also ideal for side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds. Individuals in this weight category drop down a little further into the mattress, settling into a relatively comfortable and supportive position when back or stomach sleeping as well.

For people who weigh more than 230 pounds, the mattress may not perform as well. Side sleepers should still enjoy good pressure relief under the hips and shoulders. However, stomach and back sleepers may find that the mattress sags noticeably in the midsection, which can put strain on the lower back.

Is the Idle Gel Plush Mattress Good for Couples?

The biggest draw for couples is the Idle Gel Plush’s ability to isolate motion transfer. The mattress performs exceptionally well in this regard. As it has no squeaky coils or other noise-producing components, the mattress is able to significantly minimize disruptions when sleeping with a partner.

As for couples with varying body types and preferred sleeping positions, many should find a compromise with the Idle Gel Plush mattress. The mattress has a fairly versatile medium feel and can be comfortably used by side sleepers of all body types, as well as back and side sleepers under 230 pounds.

Couples may not be so fond of the weak edge support, which limits the usable space of the mattress. The mattress also sleeps fairly hot, which may be a problem for couples who are prone to overheating.

For sex, the Idle Gel Plush provides plenty of traction but little to no bounce. Though this is a matter of personal preference, most couples prefer a more responsive surface than this mattress can provide.

Additional Services

For an extra fee, customers can choose to have the mattress delivered and set up by a White Glove delivery team, who will get in contact to schedule a delivery time. It’s also possible to coordinate removal of the previous mattress. These services are non-refundable.

Sleep Trial

Idle Sleep offers an extremely generous 18-month sleep trial. Instead of a refund, customers can opt for an exchange for a different Idle mattress. If customers wish to have a sleep trial on the new mattress, the returned mattress is subject to a $300 restocking fee.

The Idle Gel Plush mattress is backed by a limited lifetime warranty. This is applicable to the original owner of a mattress purchased through an authorized channel. Under the warranty, manufacturing or workmanship defects such as body impressions of at least 0.5 inch will entitle the customer to a repair or replacement mattress, at Idle Sleep’s discretion. Mattresses that have been used without a proper foundation are ineligible for warranty coverage.

The limited lifetime warranty also applies to replacement mattresses. In the case that a customer pays the difference to upgrade to a better replacement model, the new mattress comes with its own limited lifetime warranty.
