Idle Latex Hybrid Mattress Review

Idle Sleep was established in 2017 and currently offers five mattresses: the Idle, the Idle Gel Plush, the Idle Hybrid, the Idle Dunlop Latex Hybrid, and the Idle Talalay Latex Hybrid. The company also sells bed frames, mattress protectors, and other bedroom accessories. Every mattress is backed by an 18-month long sleep trial, giving customers plenty of time to test out their mattress at home.

Here, we’ll focus on the Dunlop and Talalay Latex Hybrids. Both models feature a tufted organic cotton cover, comfort layers made with organic wool, and either Dunlop or Talalay latex. The mattresses are flippable, with a central support core made of pocketed coils.

Idle Sleep offers customers a choice between firmness levels: medium firm or firm. Customers can elect to have the same firmness level on both sides, or to have one side medium firm and the other firm. Shoppers can also choose whether they want their mattress made with Talalay or Dunlop latex, each of which offers different nuances in feel and different price-points.

We'll start with an overview of how the Idle mattresses compare to one another. Then we’ll discuss materials, construction, customization options, and more to help you decide if it's right for you.

Idle Latex Hybrid Mattress Review: Our Verdict

The Idle Latex Hybrid brings together organic wool, latex, and pocketed coils to create a well-rounded sleeping surface. The mattress boasts strong temperature neutrality, edge support, and ease of movement. These features make it a good pick for couples who don't mind some slight motion transfer from their partner's movements.

The bed's all-natural construction and customization options should appeal to environmentally conscious shoppers and those who have a specific firmness in mind. Flipping the mattress also helps even out body impressions, potentially extending the lifespan of the mattress. That said, organic wool and latex don't come cheap, so the Idle Latex may not be for everyone.

Shoppers on a budget may be interested in the all-foam Idle mattress instead. Or, priced slightly higher, the all-foam Idle Gel Plush mattress offers more conforming and pressure relief. Idle Sleep also offers an alternative hybrid option in the Idle Hybrid. Built with slightly closer-conforming foams, this mattress comes at a cheaper price-point and offers many of the same advantages as the Idle Latex Hybrid.

How Much Is the Idle Latex Hybrid Mattress?

A queen size Idle Latex Hybrid is priced similarly to other latex hybrid models, with the Talalay latex option being more expensive than the Dunlop. Talalay latex requires a more complex manufacturing process, resulting in a higher price-point.

As a latex hybrid made with organic materials, the Idle Hybrid is costly to produce, and the higher cost is reflected in the price for the end user. Users should bear in mind that the latex layers add durability to the mattress and help resist sagging over time.

How Does the Idle Sleep Latex Hybrid Mattress Feel?

The Idle Sleep Hybrid Latex mattress has a fairly firm and resilient surface with minimal contouring. The initial layer of organic wool provides some pressure relief, but it is not as close-conforming as most synthetic foams. Likewise, the latex forms a gentle cradle that distributes body weight to reduce pressure points, but without the close hug of memory foam.

Customers can choose from several customization options when ordering the Idle Latex, including the type of latex and the firmness level. Both latex options are natural, and processed using either the Talalay or Dunlop methods. Talalay latex is often light and buoyant, offering more pressure relief and breathability. Dunlop latex has a denser feel and offers firmer support.

Firmness options include medium firm (6) or firm (8). As the mattress is reversible, it's possible to construct a model with one medium firm side and one firm side. Those who have a specific firmness preference can choose to have the same firmness on both sides of the mattress. Side sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds will likely prefer the medium firm side, while the firm option may appeal to stomach sleepers or sleepers over 230 pounds.

What Is the Idle Latex Hybrid Mattress Made Of?

The Idle Sleep Latex mattress has a seven-layer construction consisting of three comfort layers on each side and a shared pocketed coil support core. The mattress stands at 14 inches tall, which allows room for a substantial comfort section on both sides without sacrificing support. Customers should bear in mind the high profile when purchasing fitted sheets.

  • Cover Material: The Idle Latex has a breathable organic cotton cover tufted with yarn rosettes. These function as a replacement for glue to help keep the layers of the mattress in place. Built-in handles on the sides of the mattress help make it easier to flip
  • Comfort Layers: A 1-inch layer of organic wool quilted into the cover performs double duty as a natural fire barrier and top comfort layer. Wool is renowned for its exceptional moisture-wicking abilities, which help to keep the sleeper cool. It also has a natural springiness that facilitates movement on top of the bed.Below the wool is a 3-inch layer of latex, either Talalay or Dunlop according to the customer's preference. Both types of latex offer moderate contouring to relieve pressure points. Idle Sleep uses latex that is certified organic according to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Latex has an open-cell structure that makes it highly breathable. This latex is also aerated with pincore holes to further improve airflow. The Idle Latex comfort layers are identical on each side, save for the firmness.
  • Support Core: In the center of the mattress sits a 6-inch layer of pocketed coils that functions as the support core for both sides. The individually wrapped coils provide localized spinal support, as well as enhancing airflow and firming up the edges.

Does it Isolate Motion?

Rating: 3/5

Latex and coils are both inherently quite bouncy, so the Idle Latex Hybrid mattress doesn't isolate as much motion as well as a memory foam hybrid mattress. That being said, the pocketed coils do reduce motion transfer compared with a traditional innerspring mattress. Most couples should be able to sleep soundly without waking from the other person's movements, unless one person is an extra-sensitive sleeper.

Does it Sleep Cool?

Rating: 4/5

Temperature neutrality is a strong point of the Idle Latex Hybrid. Organic cotton and wool wick away moisture from the sleeper to help prevent sweat from building up around the body. Aerated open-cell latex provides a breathable comfort section, and pocketed coils allow plenty of room for heat to escape instead of accumulating in the mattress. The Talalay model is an especially good option for hot sleepers or those who live in warm climates.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating: 4/5

The Idle Latex Hybrid offers sturdy edge support that gives sleepers the confidence to sleep right up to the edge of the bed. With its relatively firm surface and pocketed coil core, the mattress allows minimal sagging along the perimeter and should also be suitable for sitting on the edge of the bed. This may provide additional security when getting in and out of bed, as well.

Edge support is an important consideration for couples, particularly those who share a smaller mattress. The Idle Latex Hybrid, and the firm model in particular, allows couples the space to spread out and use every inch of the bed.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating: 3/5 Medium Firm, 4/5 Firm

With its responsive surface and strong edges, most couples find the Idle Latex Hybrid to be well-suited to sex. The combination of latex and coils facilitates movement and helps maintain a neutral temperature. The mattress also makes relatively little noise, although the coils may start to squeak as time goes on.

Couples who prefer more traction may favor the medium firm option, which allows sleepers to sink further into the mattress. The firm option is better suited to couples who like more bounce.

What About Off-gassing?

Rating: 4/5

The Idle Latex Hybrid does not off-gas in the traditional sense, as it does not contain synthetic foams. However, some users may notice a faint rubbery smell from the latex when the mattress first arrives. This smell is not harmful and should disappear within a few days at most.

What Type of Sleeper Is the Idle Latex Hybrid Best For?

The Idle Latex Hybrid has something to offer for sleepers of almost any body type and preferred sleeping position, although some side sleepers may find it a little firm.

Side Sleepers:The medium firm option of the Idle Latex Hybrid does an excellent job of cushioning pressure points for side sleepers over 230 pounds. The medium firm version is also sufficiently soft to alleviate pressure points for individuals between 130 and 230 pounds. Unfortunately, side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds require a plusher surface to encourage proper spinal alignment and relieve pressure points. These sleepers may be better suited to the Idle Gel Plush mattress.

Combination Sleepers: Combination sleepers need a responsive surface that doesn't inhibit movement, and the Idle Latex Hybrid mattress fits the bill. With the exception of side sleepers under 130 pounds, the mattress also receives positive ratings across all body types and sleeping positions. Stomach sleepers, especially those between 130 and 230 pounds, should find the mattress firm enough to keep the hips in line with the rest of the body.

Back Sleepers: The Idle Latex Hybrid mattress provides an ideal middle ground between support and pressure relief for back sleepers. In particular, the medium firm model stands out for offering excellent lumbar support to back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, while the firm model provides the enhanced support needed for back sleepers over 230 pounds.

Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers of any weight should enjoy the firm latex surface of this mattress. Those over 230 pounds will probably want to opt for the firmer option, while those under should be fine with the medium firm version.

How Does Body Weight Impact Performance?

The more an individual weighs, the further they sink into the mattress. This affects the interplay of the different layers and may give the mattress a different feel from person to person. Typically, those who weigh less than 130 pounds find a mattress firmer, and those who weigh more than 230 pounds describe it as softer.

With options ranging from medium firm to firm, the Idle Latex Hybrid doesn't fit the typical recommendation of a mattress for sleepers under 130 pounds. As may be expected, our testers found the mattress quite firm, causing some pressure points to develop when sleeping on the side and stomach. However, back sleepers gave more favorable ratings, especially for the medium firm version.

Those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds exert more pressure on the mattress. These individuals should find the mattress ideal for side, back, or stomach sleeping. Both the medium firm and firm models provide adequate support and pressure relief, so sleepers in this group can choose the one they like best based on personal preference.

Even for sleepers over 230 pounds, the Idle Latex Hybrid mattress doesn't allow excessive amounts of sink or contouring. However, the medium firm model does contour closely enough to relieve pressure points when sleeping on the side. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers receive excellent support for the hips when sleeping on the firm model.

Is the Idle Latex Hybrid Good for Couples?

The Idle Latex Hybrid offers a good compromise for couples of most body types or preferred sleeping positions, except side sleepers under 130 pounds. The mattress also performs well on temperature neutrality, so couples can snuggle up together without turning into a human furnace.

The mattress rates well on both edge support and ease of movement, granting space to spread out and less restrictions for restless sleepers. Most movements should be isolated by the latex and the individually wrapped coils, although some motion transfer is still to be expected.

Idle Sleep’s Trial, Warranty, and Shipping Policies

Availability The Idle Latex Hybrid mattress is available for purchase through the company's website for customers in the contiguous U.S. Idle Sleep does not currently ship to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, or any other place outside the contiguous U.S., and the mattress is not sold in brick-and-mortar stores.
Shipping Shipping is free for all customers in the contiguous U.S. Because of their weight, Idle latex mattresses may need to go through UPS Freight instead of UPS Ground. In this case, they can take slightly longer to ship, and are typically delivered between 7 and 15 business days after being sent out from the factory. The shipping company may provide a tracking number or contact the customer directly to arrange delivery.

Mattresses are compressed and shrink-wrapped for shipping. All that's left to do is remove the mattress from the wrapping and let it unfurl on the bed frame. It's recommended to have a partner for this process, as the latex mattresses are especially heavy.

Additional Services Optional White Glove delivery and old mattress removal can be arranged for an extra fee. The delivery hub will contact customers to schedule a delivery window.
Sleep Trial Idle Sleep offers a generous 18-month sleep trial, which is one of the longest trial periods in the industry. The trial has a mandatory 30-night break-in period to allow your body to get used to the feel of the new mattress. After this, if you don't like the mattress, just contact Idle Sleep. The company will arrange for responsible disposal of the mattress and provide a full refund.

Instead of a refund, customers can elect to exchange their current Idle mattress for another model. This process is free unless customers also want a sleep trial for the new model, in which case Idle Sleep will charge a $300 restocking fee.

Warranty All Idle Sleep mattresses come with a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing and material defects, including body impressions of 0.5 inch or greater. Warranties are valid for the original purchaser of a new Idle mattress purchased through an authorized channel. Mattresses that have been used without an appropriate foundation shall have their warranty voided.

For mattresses that are deemed defective, Idle Sleep will provide a repair or replacement. In the latter case, the new mattress will be covered under the original warranty. Should customers choose to upgrade to a better model, this mattress will come with its own lifetime warranty.
