Hybrid mattresses place layers of soft materials such as cotton, wool, or foam above spring coils. Hybrid mattresses can thus vary widely in their firmness, coolness, and other qualities that are important for a good night’s sleep. We’ll review the Joybed LX mattress to help you decide if it is the right hybrid mattress for you. We will look at everything from its price to its feel to its warranty and discuss which sleepers will find the LX to be a great fit and which sleepers may want to look elsewhere.
While this review focuses on the Joybed LX mattress, Joybed offers two other mattresses as well. Joybed’s LXC and LXP are less firm than the LX, and may be better choices for sleepers who like the qualities of the LX but prefer a softer sleeping surface.

Joybed Mattress Review: Our Verdict
The Joybed LX is a firm and cool mattress that is particularly well suited for stomach and back sleepers. However, it may not be an optimal mattress for some side sleepers and those looking for a softer mattress.

How Does the Joybed LX Mattress Feel?
The Joybed LX has a firm and supportive feel which offers light contouring and a cool surface. Its pocketed coils and multiple comfort layers are designed to make the mattress supportive but not hard and to allow air to flow through the mattress and keep it cool at night. Sleepers, especially those lighter than 130 pounds, will tend not to sink into the bed very deeply, making it a better choice for those whose sleeping positions and weights demand a firm mattress. However, those looking for a very firm mattress may find the Joybed LX to have too much cushion.
What Is the Joybed LX Made of?
The mattress cover is made from lightweight American-sourced cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). This gives the mattress a soft and breathable surface that is hypoallergenic and free of harsh chemicals.
The comfort layers are composed of a layer of plant fiber, cotton, and wool. Each of these components plays a different role. The plant fiber layer is made from potato and bean plants and acts as a breathable yet flame-resistant barrier without the need for synthetic chemicals. The thicker cotton layer provides support and cushion while facilitating temperature control by allowing air to flow through and release heat from the mattress. The lower wool layer is designed to wick away moisture, resist microbes thanks to wool’s anti-microbial properties, and aid in the temperature control by dispersing heat away from the top of the mattress.
Underneath the comfort layers lie individually wrapped pocketed coils. These coils provide support and aid in airflow to create a cool but firm mattress. The Joybed LX’s coils are calibrated to give the bed a firm, though not hard, feel.
Does It Isolate Motion?
A mattress that isolates motion absorbs the movement happening on one side of the bed so that it isn’t noticeable on the other side of the bed. This allows one to sleep soundly through the night even if a partner or pet on the other side of the bed is fidgety or restless.
The Joybed LX Mattress isolates most but not all motion. Pocketed coils tend to be bouncy and the Joybed LX does not contain materials like foam that would significantly dampen the effects of motion. However, because its coils are individually wrapped, they do not transfer as much motion as the interconnected coils on a traditional innerspring mattress. Those who prioritize motion isolation may want to look elsewhere, though those for whom it is a lower priority will likely have no gripes with the Joybed LX Mattress in this regard.
Does It Sleep Cool?
The Joybed LX’s breathable design means it sleeps quite cool. Each of its layers is breathable, allowing heat to disperse through the cotton, plant fiber, and wool layers and flow through the coil layer. Its lack of a single heat-trapping layer makes the Joybed LX a strong choice for those who need a mattress that avoids heating up over the course of the night.
Mattresses vary widely in their tendency to trap heat and warm up to potentially uncomfortable levels over the course of the night. Those who often suffer from waking up in a hot sweat will want to prioritize a mattress’ ability to sleep cool.
Will It Sag Along the Edges?
The Joybed LX’s sturdy construction provides a reasonably sturdy edge, though those sleepers for whom edge sagging is a significant problem may want to look for a bed with stronger edge support.
Some mattresses have the tendency to crumple at the edges when weight is placed near the edges of the bed. This can result in a feeling of instability when one is near the edge of the bed and difficulty getting in and out of bed for some.
Is It Good for Sex?
Some mattresses are better for sex than others. Firm support, a cool surface, and a good amount of bounce are all features that are beneficial for couples. The Joybed LX’s firm support will prevent the feeling of being trapped, and the bounciness of its springs can aid movement. The fact that the Joybed LX is a particularly cool mattress will help keep the night comfortable for couples. However, its relatively average edge support may limit some couples to the center of the mattress.
What About Off-Gassing?
The Joybed LX is an excellent choice for those who wish to avoid off-gassing. Its natural organic components allow it to avoid off-gassing and spreading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in your home, because the mattress does not contain the foams that are commonly the source of these VOCs.
Many household items, including mattresses, can release VOCs into the air through a process called off-gassing. This can result in unpleasant smells. The Joybed LX is a great choice for those who want to avoid VOCs.
What Type of Sleeper Is the Joybed LX Mattress Best for?
Side Sleepers: As a firm mattress, the Joybed LX will provide the right support for some side sleepers and be uncomfortable for others. Side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds are likely to find the firmness of the Joybed LX comfortable. Side sleepers outside of this weight range may need more cushioning to ease the pressure on their shoulders and hips. Thus, these sleepers will likely find less firm mattresses, such as the Joybed LXC or the Joybed LXP, more comfortable.
Combination Sleepers: Sleepers who alternate between sleeping on their stomachs and sleeping on their backs will likely find both positions comfortable. Sleepers between 130 to 230 pounds should find the Joybed LX comfortable regardless of their sleeping position, so combination sleepers in this weight range are likely to be comfortable throughout the night. However, sleepers outside this weight range who tend to spend some of their time sleeping on their sides may find the Joybed LX’s firmness uncomfortable and may want to consider Joybed’s LXC or LXP model.
Back Sleepers: Back sleepers will often need a more supportive mattress to keep their spine properly aligned through the night. The Joybed LX firmness will be quite comfortable and supportive for most back sleepers. The bed’s temperature regulating abilities are particularly helpful for back sleepers, since more of their body rests directly on the mattress, which can cause heat buildup mattresses that are not as good at wicking away heat as the Joybed LX.
Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers are likely to find the level of firmness of the Joybed LX exceptionally comfortable. This is especially true for stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds, for whom the Joybed LX provides excellent support and comfort. Similarly to back sleepers, the coolness of this mattress is particularly helpful for stomach sleepers, as there is more potential for heat trapping when more of your body is in contact with the mattress.
How Does Body Weight Impact the Joybed's Performance?
The firmness of a mattress interacts with different sleepers in different ways, and a sleeper’s weight will impact if the bed is comfortable in different positions. For instance, a bed may be too firm for one side sleeper but be optimal for a lighter side sleeper whose weight is better supported by the mattress’ firmness. The Joybed LX is more firm than the average mattress, making it a better fit for some sleepers than others.
The Joybed LX is best for stomach sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds, who will find its firmness to support their bodies and keep their spines in a comfortable neutral position. Stomach sleepers who weigh less will likely still find it comfortable. The firmness of the Joybed LX makes it an average choice for most side sleepers, though side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds will find it more comfortable than side sleepers outside that weight range. Side sleepers outside this weight range may find that the lack of cushion puts pressure on their hips and shoulders and leaves their spines in uncomfortable positions. Back sleepers of all weights will typically have a good experience on the Joybed LX, as its firmness is likely to support their spines in a neutral and comfortable position.
Is It Good for Couples?
The Joybed LX Mattress’ strong ability to disperse heat and sleep cool is a particular benefit for couples who find themselves overheating at night. The Joybed LX’s firmness helps prevent couples from feeling trapped or having difficulty moving around at night. The mattress’ decent motion isolation and edge support make it a fair choice for couples with at least one member who is a restless sleeper, though couples who require excellent motion isolation and edge support may want to look elsewhere.
