The Luma Mattress is the signature mattress from Luma Sleep, a bed-in-a-box company founded in 2015. This latex hybrid mattress is made with a combination of pocketed coils and Talalay latex, which provides breathability, responsiveness, and support. The original Luma Mattress offers balanced pressure relief, temperature moderation, and very little motion transfer. Buyers can choose from three different firmness options. Luma offers additional models, such as the Natural Latex Hybrid, which has additional layers of latex; the Luma Hybrid Slumber System, which has interchangeable comfort layers; and the Latex Slumber System, and all-latex mattress).

How Does the Luma Mattress Feel?
The feel of the Luma Mattress depends on which firmness level you choose. The Luma Mattress comes in three firmness levels. Scored from least firm to most firm on a 1-10 scale, the Plush model rates medium soft (4), the Medium is medium firm (6), and the Firm model corresponds to a firm (7).
The Luma Mattress is a latex hybrid, so all firmness levels support and conform to your body without the “sinking into quicksand” feeling you might feel on standard memory foam. The Plush option offers a softer feel with more cushioning, while the Firm option will provide more resilience and steady support. The Medium option lands somewhere between the two, right in the center-of-the-road firmness range that most people prefer in a mattress.
In addition, all three models are topped with a Tencel cover to make the sleep surface smooth and soft.
What Is the Luma Mattress Made Of?
The Luma Mattress has three main layers and a cover:
The cover of the Luma Mattress is made from Tencel lyocell fabric. This material is moisture-wicking and breathable, and helps air move throughout the mattress to prevent buildups of mustiness, excessive moisture, and body heat. The Tencel also gives the sleep surface a soft, inviting feel.
The comfort layer of this mattress consists of 2 inches of natural, open-cell Talalay latex. The latex responds to the unique contours of your body, and compresses in response to pressure as you move in your sleep. This allows the Luma Mattress to provide pressure relief for the back, hips, and shoulders. For hot sleepers, the Luma Mattress’ aerated latex helps fight the heat retention that is sometimes common with latex mattresses.
Beneath the comfort level is an 8-inch base comprised of pocketed coils. Each coil is individually covered in its own fabric sheath, which helps the coils act independently as well as in unison. Pocketed coils make it easier for the Luma Mattress to respond effectively to pressure on different parts of the mattress, while also preventing motion transfer from one part to another. Additionally, these coils help the mattress fit the contours of each individual body.
The support core rests on a 1-inch base level of extra-dense high-density polyfoam. This foam layer protects the coil system and increases its durability and lifespan. It also gives the bed added shock absorbency and resilience.
Does it Isolate Motion?
The Luma Mattress mattress allows some motion to transfer across the surface. The bounciness of the coil layer and the resilience of the Talaylay latex comfort layer contribute to this effect. Since the Luma Mattress’ individually pocketed coils are able to compress individually, they are able to isolate motion better than an innerspring model, in which the springs are all connected. However, those who share a bed with a restless partner and awaken easily due to movement may want to consider an all-foam model or a mattress with memory foam comfort layers.
Does it Sleep Cool?
The Luma Mattress is constructed with temperature control in mind. All three firmness options effectively maintain a cool and comfortable sleep surface throughout the night.
As a hybrid, the Luma Mattress offers more breathability through its pocketed coil core than its all-latex mattress counterparts. In fact, the Luma Mattress outperforms a number of hybrid models when it comes to temperature regulation. The latex used in the Luma Mattress is aerated to allow additional airflow, and the Tencel cover is breathable and wicks away moisture. These factors all contribute to the Luma Mattress’ effective temperature control.
Will It Sag Along the Edges?
Rating: 3/5 (Plush), 4/5 (Medium Firm, Firm)
All three firmness levels of the Luma Mattress are constructed with a pocketed coil support core featuring reinforced perimeters. As a result, the mattress is generally unlikely to sag much around the edges. However, the Luma Mattress’ edge support performance depends on which firmness level you choose.
While both the Medium and the Firm models offer strong edge support, the Plush model is less effective at keeping its edges supported under weight and pressure. The comfort layer of the Plush model compresses more easily, which can result in a feeling of instability when sitting on the edge of the bed.
Is It Good for Sex?
Rating: 4/5 (Plush), 5/5 (Medium Firm, Firm)
The Luma Mattress is an excellent mattress for sex, as the dual bounce of the latex and the pocketed coil core provide buoyant support that facilitates sex. The natural Talalay latex also gives the Luma Mattress the resilience to quickly return to its original shape after pressure is removed, which makes moving around on the surface of the bed much easier. This added mobility also helps with sexual activity and puts less strain on joints, knees, and hips. For comparison, all-foam mattresses – and even some hybrid models with thick foam comfort layers – offer less resilience and surface mobility, and can make you feel like you’re sinking in while having sex.
However, it’s worth noting that since the Plush option does have a softer comfort layer, it offers slightly less resilience and bounce than the Medium and Firm options. While the Plush version of the Luma Mattress still rates highly in this category, couples looking for a bit more resilience in the top layer may want to go with the Medium or Firm options.
What About Off-Gassing?
Off-gassing is a term used to refer to the initial smell that sometimes comes off of a vacuum-packed mattress when it is first opened. The scent originates from materials used during the production or packaging of the mattress.
Since the Luma Mattress is made from natural latex instead of synthetic foam, and features a pocketed coil support core that enables air to circulate through the mattress, customers should experience very little off-gassing, when they open up their Luma Mattress. The smell should be relatively faint, and should dissipate within a few hours in a well-ventilated room.
What Type of Sleeper Is the Luma Mattress Best For?
Different mattresses are designed to accommodate different sleeping positions. We’ll break down how the Luma Mattress sizes up with different sorts of sleepers:
Side Sleepers: People who sleep on their side tend to put their weight on their shoulders and hips. In order to keep the spine aligned and to prevent pressure points from developing, side sleepers need a little more cushioning than other sorts of sleepers. The Luma Mattress gives side sleepers contouring support they need for proper spinal alignment. Side sleepers under 130 pounds will likely prefer the Plush option of the Luma Mattress, since it provides the most cushioning. However, side sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds may want to select the Medium option, as the added support helps keep the spine aligned.
Back Sleepers: Back sleepers generally need strong support to keep their spines in alignment. The Luma Mattress has responsive cushioning from both latex and pocketed coils, which gives back sleepers more than enough lower back support to sleep soundly and comfortably. The Firm option performs the best for back sleepers, generally, though some may prefer the Medium or Plush models.
Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers need support to keep their hips and lower abdomen from sinking too far into the mattress. The Luma Mattress provides stomach sleepers with enough resilient support and cushioning to keep the hips in alignment and to prevent pressure points from occurring. The Firm option will provide the best support for sleepers who use this position, though those who prefer softer surfaces may still find the Medium or Plush versions comfortable, especially if they weigh less than 130 pounds.
Combination Sleepers: Combination sleepers tend to switch positions, either when they initially fall asleep or while they are sleeping. They need different types of support depending on their position but in general, the Luma Mattress provides enough cushioning and resilient support to keep most combination sleepers comfortable. The Luma Mattress is especially good for combination sleepers because it is quite easy to move around on the surface of the mattress.
How Does Body Weight Impact Performance?
While personal preference will of course play a role in what each individual considers comfortable, in general, sleepers under 130 pounds will find the Plush option preferable, while sleepers over 230 pounds will be best served by the Firm option since it provides the most robust support. Those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds tend to prefer the Firm model if they sleep on their backs or stomachs, though side sleepers in this weight range will appreciate the additional cushioning offered by the Medium version.
Is the Luma Sleep Mattress Good for Couples?
The Luma Mattress is a great mattress for couples. The mattress offers excellent responsiveness for sex. Additionally, the edge support of this mattress – especially with the Medium and Firm options – will allow couples to make the most out of their sleep surface and sleep as far toward the edge as they’d like without feeling like the bed is sinking beneath them. The Luma Mattress also offers decent motion isolation. This is especially helpful if one or both members of a couple is a light sleeper and is easily disturbed when their partner gets in and out of bed, or when they move around in their sleep. The Luma Mattress’ temperature control also keeps the mattress from getting too hot, which is especially important considering the doubled body heat of two people.
