Casper Element Mattress Review: Our Verdict

The Casper Element mattress is an ideal pick for anyone shopping on a budget, including students and young professionals. The mattress is made with quality materials at an affordable price point.

Casper designed the Element mattress with pressure point relief and temperature regulation in mind. For those who want a foam mattress but tend to sleep hot, the Element mattress is certainly worth considering. An aerated comfort layer of polyfoam dissipates heat, while the cover helps wick away moisture. Since it has an all-foam construction, the Element mattress has top-notch motion isolation. This makes it a great pick for couples.

Those who weigh more than 200 pounds might want to consider one of Casper’s hybrid models instead. The hybrid models are also a better fit for anyone who might want a mattress with ample bounce.

It’s competitively priced for a foam mattress in general, as most models cost closer to $1,000. How Does the Casper Element Mattress Feel?

The Casper Element mattress provides standout pressure point relief. The medium firm (6) feel is conforming and supportive. This makes it ideal for a range of sleeping positions and body types. The two layers of foam respond to pressure and help keep the spine aligned.

The high-density polyfoam offers ample support and reinforces the comfort layer above. The new Casper Element mattress does not use memory foam in its construction, so don’t expect a close body-hugging feel. Though you won’t sink deeply into the mattress, the polyfoam comfort layer still contours to the shape of your body. This layer cushions areas like the shoulders, lower back, and hips as they press into the mattress.

Since the top layer is aerated, it allows air to flow throughout the mattress. This prevents the feeling of sleeping hot that is commonly associated with foam mattresses. The Element mattress also isolates motion well and maintains a consistent level of support from edge to edge.

What Is the Casper Element Made of?

The Casper Element mattress has a height of 10 inches, which is average for a foam mattress. It is made with eco-friendly materials and CertiPUR-US Certified foams. Though the original Essential mattress had a three-layer construction that included memory foam, the Element mattress has a simple two-layer polyfoam construction that we’ll break down here.

Cover Material

Casper uses eco-friendly textiles when possible. The cover of the Casper Element mattress is made with recycled polyester made from plastic bottles. There are up to nine plastic bottles used in each cover. The fabric also includes upcycled cotton, rayon, and lycra. Cotton adds breathability to the cover and helps wick away moisture.

Comfort Layers

The top layer of the Element mattress is AirScapeTM foam. This proprietary blend of polyfoam is perforated for maximum breathability. This layer encourages airflow throughout the mattress and prevents sleeping hot. It also relieves pressure points by contouring to the shape of the body. It’s responsive and cushioning. This layer helps isolate motion and prevent sleep disturbances. Since it’s more resilient than memory foam, it provides better ease of movement.

Support Core

The support core of the Casper Element mattress is high-density polyfoam. This durable base keeps you from sinking into the mattress. The polyfoam base reinforces the comfort layer and provides support from edge to edge. It also increases the lifespan of the mattress and prevents sagging over time. In general, high-density polyfoam is more durable than low-density foam and is less likely to break down or deteriorate over time.

Does the Casper Element Isolate Motion?

Rating: 4/5

The foam construction of the Casper Element mattress offers top-notch motion isolation. When we look at motion isolation, we want to see how much movement transfers across the bed. This includes smaller movements like shifting positions, and bigger movements like getting in and out of bed.

We know that motion isolation is an essential factor for those who share the bed as it prevents sleep disturbances throughout the night. Materials like memory foam and polyfoam tend to absorb movement, so we generally recommend foam mattresses for light sleepers. Hybrid and latex mattresses have more bounce and may transfer movements from one area to another.

In general, Casper mattresses isolate motion exceptionally well. The Element mattress absorbs movement and prevents it from rippling across the bed. You shouldn’t be disturbed by your partner’s movements throughout the night, especially if they are prone to tossing and turning.

Does the Casper Element Sleep Cool?

Rating: 3/5

For its latest generation of mattresses, Casper put temperature regulation at the forefront of each design. The Casper Element mattress sleeps cooler than the average foam mattress as a result. Its eco-friendly cover includes cotton to wick away heat and moisture. The comfort layer of AirScapeTM foam is aerated to increase airflow throughout the mattress and dissipate body heat. This prevents sleeping hot.

Those who have slept on a memory foam mattress before know that memory foam responds to heat and pressure and conforms closely to the shape of the body. Since the Element does not use memory foam in its construction, there is less heat retention and better airflow. The medium firm feel and high-density foam base of the Casper Element mattress prevent sinking in deeply. This means that air can circulate around the body.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating: 3/5

The Casper Element mattress has average edge support for a foam mattress. Generally speaking, foam mattresses lack a reinforced perimeter, so they rarely perform as well in this category as a hybrid mattress would. Edge support refers to how well the edges of the mattress stand up to pressure. Sinking in along the edges can make it harder to get in and out of bed. A lack of edge support also decreases the usable surface area of the bed, and makes it less comfortable for people to sleep near the edge.

The Casper Element mattress has a high-density polyfoam base for consistent edge-to-edge support. This prevents the feeling of rolling off if you sleep near the edge of the bed. That being said, the lack of a reinforced perimeter is most noticeable when you sit near the edge of the bed. The foam layers respond to pressure and sink in, especially for those who weigh more than 200 pounds.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating: 3/5

There is some bounce to the Casper Element mattress, since it uses resilient polyfoam in the comfort layer instead of memory foam. This helps facilitate movement, which is beneficial for changing positions during sex. The foam provides traction as well. Since the mattress is silent when bearing weight it’s a discreet choice for couples. It also has average edge support, so couples can use the entire surface area of the mattress. That being said, the lack of coils means the mattress may not be bouncy or resilient enough for some couples.

What About Off-gassing?

Rating: 2/5

There is an initial odor when the Casper Element mattress is first unboxed. Off-gassing is the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are released into the air. These compounds are not considered harmful, and are commonly found in synthetic foam mattresses. The Element mattress is made with CertiPUR-US certified foams that are low in VOCs. The initial odor is typically the result of the mattress being vacuum-sealed. It usually dissipates within a few days, once the mattress has had a chance to air out after being removed from its packaging.

What Type of Sleeper Is the Casper Wave Mattress Best for?

Since the Casper Element mattress has a good balance of contouring comfort and full-body support, there are benefits for each sleeping position. The polyfoam comfort layer conforms to the shape of the body for a personalized feel, and the medium firm rating should appeal to a wide audience. That being said, there are special considerations to keep in mind for each sleeping position, which we’ll cover here.

  • Side Sleepers: Pressure relief is a key component in a mattress for side sleepers. The Casper Element mattress is designed to relieve pressure points and cushion sharp areas like the hips and shoulders. Since these areas press into the mattress, pressure points can develop easily for side sleepers. The responsiveness of the Element mattress prevents pressure from building up in the hips and shoulders while keeping the spine aligned.
  • Combination Sleepers: Combination sleepers benefit from ease of movement in a mattress. This allows them to shift positions as needed without feeling restricted or trapped by the mattress. The Casper Element mattress uses a resilient polyfoam that makes it easy for combo sleepers to shift from their backs to their sides or stomachs. The mattress also offers ample support for most sleeping positions.
  • Back Sleepers: For a back sleeper, the Casper Element mattress conforms to the shape of the body and relieves pressure on the spine. The high-density foam base prevents sinking in and helps keep the spine aligned. This makes it a good choice overall for back sleepers.

How Does Body Weight Impact the Casper Element Mattress' Performance?

Body weight has a direct impact on mattress performance. The 10-inch profile and all-foam construction of the Casper Element mattress make it an ideal choice for anyone who weighs less than 200 pounds. This is because foam reacts to pressure to conform closely. The more a person weighs, the more pressure is put on a mattress. This can lead to impressions and sagging over time.

The Casper Element mattress is a great fit for sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. The foam comfort layer conforms to the shape of the body and relieves pressure points, especially for side sleepers. The high-density polyfoam base ensures that back sleepers and stomach sleepers in this weight category are also properly supported.

For those who weigh between 130 and 200 pounds, the Casper Element mattress is a good choice. It really shines for side sleepers, since the conforming polyfoam comfort layer cushions the shoulders and hips. For back sleepers, the mattress keeps the spine in a neutral position and relieves pressure on the lower back. That being said, it may not be supportive enough for stomach sleepers, depending on their weight and comfort preferences. Stomach sleepers tend to prefer a firm mattress.

We hesitate to recommend the Casper Element for anyone who weighs more than 200 pounds. For heavy sleepers in this weight category, we usually recommend a hybrid mattress. The Casper Element does have a high-density base that prevents sinking in too much, so it offers fair support for side and back sleepers who weigh more than 200 pounds. For stomach sleepers, it just isn’t firm enough. There is the possibility that the hips or abdomen will sink in too deeply and knock the spine out of alignment.

Is the Casper Element Mattress Good for Couples?

The Casper Element mattress is a good choice for most couples. We especially recommend it for couples if both parties weigh less than 200 pounds and are primarily back or side sleepers. The medium firm feel appeals to a range of people, and is a good compromise if you and your partner have different preferences. It’s a budget-friendly pick that is great for couples who might have other expenses on their minds.

When we recommend a mattress for couples, there are a few key categories we consider closely. Motion isolation, ease of movement, edge support, and temperature neutrality all determine whether or not a mattress will perform well for couples.

The Casper Element mattress isolates motion and minimizes sleep disturbances. It also has more resilience than the average foam mattress, so it’s easy to move around on and change positions as needed. The solid edge support (for a foam mattress) increases the usable surface area of the bed. And for couples who tend to sleep hot, the mattress takes measures to dissipate heat and maintain a temperature neutral feel.
