Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Review

Tuft & Needle launched in 2012 with a goal in mind: to simplify the mattress shopping experience. Buying a mattress online has become increasingly popular, and Tuft & Needle has only expanded since its initial launch. In 2018, the company partnered with Serta Simmons. Tuft & Needle now offers three mattress styles:

We’ll focus on the Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress in this review.

While the other two T&N mattresses are foam models, the hybrid mattress has a coil support base with a foam comfort system. Tuft & Needle uses a proprietary foam blend known as Adaptive foam. It’s infused with graphite and ceramic gel beads to prevent heat retention and offer pressure relief. The dual coil construction of the hybrid mattress is responsive and supportive.

Our comprehensive review of the T&N Hybrid mattress includes performance ratings, pricing information, and details on the construction of the mattress. We’ll also break down the firmness of the mattress and how it feels for different sleepers. To help you determine if this is the best mattress for you, we also include information on Tuft & Needle’s shipping and return policies, sleep trial, and warranty coverage.

Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Review: Our Verdict

We recommend the T&N Hybrid mattress for anyone who wants a hybrid mattress that relieves pressure while offering full-body support. The quilted pillow top and foam comfort system cushions the shoulders, hips, and back. The Adaptive foam is responsive, but the dual coil construction and medium firmness prevent the feeling of sinking in too deeply. This is ideal for side, back, and stomach sleepers who weigh less than 200 pounds.

Two layers of coils ensure the mattress has ample bounce, making it a great choice for couples and combination sleepers. The mattress is resilient and easy to move around on, as it bounces back to its original shape quickly.

T&N Adaptive foam is infused with ceramic gel beads and graphite, which draw heat away from the body. The coils keep air circulating throughout the mattress and prevent the feeling of sleeping hot.

How Much Is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress?

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress costs $1,495 for a Queen size. While it is the most expensive of the three T&N mattresses, it’s relatively affordable for a hybrid mattress. Tuft & Needle takes measures to keep each mattress reasonably priced. Since the other T&N mattresses are foam models, it makes sense that the more complex hybrid mattress would be more expensive. Tuft & Needle offers occasional promotions and sales to discount the price of the mattress.

How Does the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Feel?

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress is constructed with a quilted pillow top and foam comfort system, which provide pressure point relief and gentle contouring. The Adaptive foam is resilient and bounces back to its original shape as you move or change positions. The micro coils in the transition layer are responsive. Combined with the foam comfort layers, the T&N Hybrid mattress has a cradling effect.

However, you won’t sink deeply into the mattress due to the dual coil construction and medium firmness. The coil base helps keep the spine aligned while the comfort system alleviates pressure on the body. Since the T&N Hybrid falls in the middle of the firmness scale, it’s not too soft or too firm. It should be noted, though, that firmness is subjective and the mattress will feel different depending on your weight and sleeping position.

What Is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Made Of?

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress has a height of 12 inches, which is about average for a hybrid mattress. There are 6 layers, which we will break down in-depth here. The complex construction of the mattress results in a responsive and supportive feel.

Cover Material

The micro polyamide and polyester blend cover of the T&N Hybrid mattress is quilted with one inch of Adaptive foam. The breathable knit cover allows air to flow through. The open-cell foam also encourages airflow and draws heat away from the body. This top layer relieves pressure points and gently contours to the shape of the body.

Comfort Layers

Beneath the quilted pillow top is two inches of Adaptive foam, which is infused with ceramic gel beads and graphite. Graphite draws heat and moisture away from the body, while ceramic gel beads regulate temperature and support the shoulders and hips. The Adaptive foam is infused with carbon fiber, which prevents sagging and deep impressions over time. A layer of micro coils underneath the foam help dissipate heat and add bounce to the mattress. The comfort system of the T&N Hybrid mattress cradles the body. A transition layer of foam sits between the micro coils and the support core.

Support Core

Tempered steel pocketed coils form the base of the T&N Hybrid mattress. The coils are individually encased in fabric to reduce the amount of motion transfer across the bed. The coil support core has a reinforced perimeter, which provides edge support and makes it easy to get in and out of bed. A polyfoam base reinforces the coils.

The T&N Hybrid is made in the United States. It is also CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning it is made without harmful chemicals and meets strict chemical emissions standards.

Does the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Isolate Motion?

Rating: 3/5

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid isolates motion to a certain extent. Adaptive foam has more bounce than memory foam and does not absorb motion as well. In addition to a resilient foam comfort system, the T&N Hybrid mattress has two layers of coils that add bounce to the mattress and facilitate movement. As a result, you are likely to feel your partner getting in and out of bed. Smaller movements like shifting or changing positions are less likely to be felt since the coils are pocketed and topped with a foam comfort system.

In general, hybrid mattresses usually offer ease of movement, and do not always isolate motion well as a result. The foam T&N mattresses do a better job at isolating motion and are worth considering if you are a light sleeper who shares the bed.

Does the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Sleep Cool?

Rating: 4/5

The Tuft and Needle Hybrid mattress prevents heat retention. The knit cover is breathable and quilted with a layer of open-cell Adaptive foam. This provides more airflow throughout the comfort layers than you would expect from a foam mattress. The proprietary foam blend includes graphite and gel beads that dissipate heat and moisture. With two layers of coils, there is ample airflow throughout the mattress, which prevents heat from building up.

We generally recommend hybrid mattresses for those who tend to sleep hot, since they have more airflow than all-foam models. The T&N Hybrid is no exception. It maintains a temperature neutral feel even for hot sleepers.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating: 4/5

The tempered steel coil base of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress has reinforced edges. This means the perimeter does not sink in when you sit or sleep near the edge. The carbon fiber in the comfort system prevents sagging over time.

Edge support is important for a number of reasons. Having a reinforced perimeter makes it easier to get in and out of bed. It also increases the usable surface area of the bed, which can make a small bed feel bigger for couples. In general, hybrid mattresses have better edge support than foam models.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating: 4/5

Since the Tuft & Needle Hybrid is resilient, it is easy to move around on. Adaptive foam prevents the feeling of being stuck and makes it easy to change positions during sex. The dual coil layers add bounce and facilitate movement. And since the edges are reinforced, couples can use the entire surface area of the mattress. Often, the downside to hybrid mattresses is that innerspring coils are prone to making noise. In the T&N hybrid, the coils are pocketed and muffled by foam layers above, so there is minimal noise.

What About Off-gassing?

Rating: 4/5

There is minimal off-gassing with the Tuft & Needle Hybrid when it is first unboxed. Off-gassing is the result of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) being released into the air. This is most common with synthetic foams that have been compressed and vacuum-sealed. The T&N hybrid is CertiPUR-US certified and low in VOCs. Though there is an initial odor at first, it should dissipate quickly in a well-ventilated room.

What Type of Sleeper Is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Best for?

The Tuft and Needle Hybrid mattress is a good choice for the majority of sleepers. It balances pressure-relieving comfort with full-body support. The medium firmness appeals to a wide range of body types, sleeping positions, and comfort preferences. Additionally, the mattress is responsive and easy to move around on. There are special considerations for each sleeping position, which we’ll break down here.

  • Side Sleepers: For side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 200 pounds, the T&N Hybrid mattress is an excellent choice. The mattress contours to the shape of the body and cushions the shoulders and hips as they press into the mattress. Side sleepers who weigh less may prefer a softer mattress, as they put less pressure on the mattress. Those who weigh more may benefit from a firmer mattress, like the T&N Original or Mint mattress.
  • Combination Sleepers: Combination sleepers shift positions, and may sleep on their side, back, or stomach at any point throughout the night. The T&N Hybrid has a responsive micro coil layer and a pocket coil support core, making it easy to change positions as needed. It offers good support across the board for stomach, side, and back sleepers, especially for those who weigh less than 200 pounds.
  • Back Sleepers: The Adaptive foam in the comfort system of the T&N Hybrid mattress conforms to the shape of your body. For back sleepers, this means the lower back is properly supported and the spine is kept in alignment.

How Does Body Weight Impact the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress's Performance?

The T&N Hybrid can work for a variety of body weights, but performs best for those between 130 and 200 pounds.

Body weight can impact the performance of any mattress. It affects how firm the mattress feels, and whether or not the mattress provides adequate support. When we look at how a mattress performs based on body weight, we tend to divide sleepers into three categories: those who weigh less than 130 pounds, those who weigh between 130 and 200 pounds, and those who weigh more than 200 pounds.

The Tuft & Needle hybrid mattress will feel firmer to those that weigh less than 130 pounds. People in this weight category put less pressure on the mattress and do not sink in as much. As a result, these people often prefer a medium soft to medium mattress firmness. The T&N Hybrid mattress cushions the shoulders and hips and prevents pressure points from developing. It is rated fairly well for all sleeping positions in this weight category.

For those who weigh between 130 and 200 pounds, the T&N Hybrid is a good choice. It offers excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The combination of conforming foam and supportive coils is ideal for stomach and back sleepers, too. Since you won’t sink deeply into the mattress, your spine should be kept in proper alignment.

People who weigh more than 200 pounds will need to take their sleeping position into consideration. Side sleepers find that the T&N Hybrid mattress cushions their shoulders and hips and offers ample support. Stomach and back sleepers in this weight category usually prefer a medium firm to firm mattress instead.

Is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Good for Couples?

We recommend the Tuft & Needle Hybrid mattress for couples for a few reasons. First, we know that many couples have different comfort preferences, sleeping positions, and body types. The T&N Hybrid has a medium firmness that can be considered a middle ground for many couples.

When we consider whether or not a mattress is ideal for couples, we also look at edge support and ease of movement. These factors are essential for sex. Having a bed that has a reinforced perimeter like the T&N Hybrid mattress ensures couples can use the entire mattress. This is great for couples who want to sleep near the edge of the bed, rather than sharing the center. Ease of movement makes it easy to change positions during sex. The trade-off here is that the T&N Hybrid mattress does not isolate motion as well as the T&N foam mattresses do.

Another benefit of the T&N Hybrid mattress for couples is its ability to regulate temperature. Each layer dissipates heat and moisture, preventing the buildup of body heat. This helps couples stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.
