WinkBed Mattress: Our Verdict

The WinkBed Mattress is a hybrid model available in four firmness options. Sleepers can choose between the Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, or Plus version of the WinkBed, making the mattress a good option for a wide range of sleepers regardless of their body type or sleep position.

With a hybrid construction, the WinkBed offers a balance of support and pressure relief. Our testing revealed the mattress also provided notable temperature control, motion isolation, and edge support.

We found the WinkBed to be an excellent choice for sleepers seeking versatility and durability.  High-quality materials give the mattress a luxurious feel with an approachable price-point, making it a good option for a range of budgets.

WinkBed Mattress: An Introduction

The WinkBed Mattress includes four models with varying levels of firmness: Softer (4), Luxury Firm (6), Firmer (7), and Plus (8). The premium hybrid mattress has a reputation for quality and performance with an accessible price tag.

We’ll take a closer look at which model best suits different sleeper types as well as each model’s performance characteristics, materials, and cost. We’ll also cover where to buy a WinkBed and answer frequently asked questions to help you decide if the WinkBed is right for you.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the WinkBed Mattress?

Each version of the WinkBed has its own feel, and the best mattress for each sleeper largely depends on their weight, sleep position, and other preferences.

With deeply conforming foam layers, the Softer (4) model best suits sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. Sleepers over 230 pounds may find the Softer option lacks support and allows too much sinkage. The majority of sleepers may find the best fit in the Luxury Firm’s balanced medium firm (6) feel. Its moderate contouring and responsive support core worked especially well for our testers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds across all sleep positions.

The Firmer (7) model provides more pushback, making it a better match for individuals over 230 pounds as well as back and stomach sleepers who prefer the feeling of sleeping on rather than in their mattress. The Plus (8) offers more support for heavier individuals and people who enjoy a firm sleep surface.

Pros

  • Multiple models allow sleepers to select their ideal firmness level
  • High-quality materials sourced, crafted, and tested for durability in the U.S.
  • Built-in cooling technology wicks away heat and promotes breathability

Cons

  • Couples with different body types may need to compromise on the model they select
  • Polyfoam provides less contouring than memory foam’s signature hug
  • Comfort level depends on accurately matching firmness to body type and sleep preference

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

We rate mattress firmness on a 10-point scale, with 1 being very soft and 10 being extremely firm. Most mattresses made today fall between soft (3) and firm (8). The best firmness level for an individual sleeper depends on their body type and sleep position. The right firmness level helps to promote proper spinal alignment and provides pressure relief to sensitive points, while the wrong firmness level can lead to aches, pains, and overall discomfort.

We’ll cover how different types of sleepers respond to each WinkBed model below.

Side Sleepers

Our side-sleeping testers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds appreciated the Luxury Firm’s  combination of comfort and support. Side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds preferred the Softer model, as the thicker Euro-top provided more contouring.

For side sleepers over 230 pounds, the Firmer and Plus options were both rated highly during testing. Both models have excellent pushback, which offers support for larger frames while still providing pressure relief.

Back Sleepers

Back-sleeping testers under 130 pounds preferred the Softer and the Luxury Firm models. The Softer version is better suited to lighter back sleepers who appreciate more give in their mattress, while the Luxury Firm works best for sleepers under 230 pounds seeking a supportive sleep surface.

Back-sleeping testers between 130 and 230 pounds rated the Luxury Firm and Firmer models highly, while testers over 230 pounds favored the Firmer and Plus options.

Stomach Sleepers

The Softer mattress earned average marks from our stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. All other stomach sleepers experienced sinkage with the Softer model. Lighter stomach sleepers who prefer less contouring rated the Luxury Firm highly.

Stomach sleepers weighing between 130 to 230 pounds enjoyed the widest range of mattress firmness compatibility. The Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus models offered average-weight stomach sleepers a balance of comfort and support. Preferences between models depended on where the sleeper fell within the weight range and their inclination toward a softer or firmer sleep surface.

Stomach sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds enjoyed the Firmer and Plus models, pointing to the noticeable pushback and support around the torso.

Our Performance Ratings

We’ll delve into our performance ratings for the WinkBed Mattress. Our ratings are based on a 5-point scale, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent, and evaluate each WinkBed model in several key categories.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 3/5

All four WinkBed models offer above-average contouring. The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions feature multiple polyfoam comfort layers paired with a Euro-top designed to cradle curves and cushion joints. The Plus combines high-density polyfoam with latex for a firmer, more responsive feel while still providing pressure relief.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5

Each WinkBed model features a hybrid design that promotes airflow thanks to a coil-based support core. The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer options incorporate gel-infused polyfoam designed to wick away body heat. The Plus uses latex, which is a naturally temperature neutral material. All WinkBed models feature a breathable, moisture-wicking Tencel cover.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5 (Softer), 3/5 (Luxury Firm, Firmer, Plus)

The WinkBed’s hybrid construction uses individually pocketed coils that minimize motion transfer. Foam and latex comfort layers also help prevent movement from transferring across the surface, making it less likely for partners to disturb each other when they shift positions at night. With an additional 2 inches of polyfoam, the Softer mattress provides slightly better motion isolation. However, we found the Luxury Firm, Firmer, and the Plus models minimized movement as well as other hybrid mattresses.

Edge Support

Rating: 5/5 (Luxury Firm, Firmer, Plus), 4/5 (Softer)

All WinkBed models use high-quality steel springs to form the support core. The springs are engineered with an extraEDGE support system designed to prevent the mattress edges from sagging. The spring system combined with firmer foams or denser latex creates excellent edge support.

The Softer model’s added cushioning in the comfort layer somewhat reduces the effectiveness of the extraEdge system, but the increased contouring may make it a worthwhile trade-off for those seeking a plusher feel.

Durability

Rating: 5/5 (Plus), 4/5 (Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer)

WinkBed uses a proprietary DuraTech system that incorporates high-grade materials designed for durability. The Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer versions of the WinkBed are crafted with high-density foams and triple-tempered steel coils. The Plus replaces the foam layer with latex, which is more durable and typically has a longer lifespan than polyfoam or memory foam. Given the extra focus on durable materials in the Plus model, we expect it to last significantly longer than the average hybrid lifespan of between 6.5 and 7.5 years, while the other three models will likely need replacing closer to that timeframe.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 4/5 (Luxury Firm, Firmer, Plus), 3/5 (Softer)

Firmer foams in the Luxury Firm and Firmer models give sleepers the feeling of sleeping on rather than in the mattress. The foam’s light hug makes it easier for sleepers to change positions. Similarly, the latex in the comfort layer of the Plus version is responsive, allowing for easier movement.

Extra foam in the Softer mattress is meant to cradle sleepers, conforming to their bodies for added comfort. This can make it more difficult to change positions, but those seeking more contouring from their mattress may not mind the difference.

Sex

Rating: 4/5 (Luxury Firm, Firmer, Plus), 3/5 (Softer)

Responsive, supportive foams in the Luxury Firm and Firmer WinkBed models provide a dynamic surface for sex. The same can be said for the springy feel of latex in the Plus version. Active couples and partners who change positions often will appreciate the responsive surface of these models.

The additional foam layers in the Softer model may make it more challenging for couples to change positions. However, it’s a good choice for partners that tend to stay in one position or who want more cushioning.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 4/5

Hybrid mattresses incorporate fewer synthetic materials and generally have less off-gassing than their all-foam counterparts. The WinkBed exceeds expectations even among hybrid mattress models due to the careful sourcing of its components.

The foams used in the Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer models are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that cause the odors associated with off-gassing. The 100% pure latex comfort layer in the Plus mattress emits similarly low levels of VOCs.

What Is the WinkBed Mattress Made of?

WinkBeds are made in the U.S. from high-quality materials, including a sustainably-sourced Tencel cover and recycled, triple-tempered steel coils in the support core. Each model also includes a proprietary LumbarLayer intended to provide more support to the middle of the body where most sleepers tend to carry the most weight.

The comfort layer varies by model. The Softer mattress features a Euro-top made of gel-infused polyfoam quilted in three layers, and two separate 2-inch layers of polyfoam provide added plushness. Both the Luxury Firm and Firmer versions of the WinkBed have a two-layer Euro-top followed by a single 2-inch layer of polyfoam.

The Plus retains the Euro-top, but exchanges the quilted foam for high-density polyfoam for better shape retention. It also replaces polyfoam with a zoned 2.5-inch layer of open-cell latex. The zoned springs in the support core are specifically designed to provide a solid foundation for heavier sleepers.

How Much Does the WinkBed Mattress Cost?

Compared to similar luxury hybrid mattresses, WinkBeds are a great value, as they offer similar or better quality with a more affordable price tag.

WinkBed Mattress FAQ

Are WinkBeds worth it?

Given the quality of the materials and workmanship, WinkBed provides a good value for your money. The 120-night sleep trial offers insurance against a poor fit in firmness level or overall feel, making an investment in a WinkBed a low-risk option.

How thick is the WinkBed Mattress?

All four models of the WinkBed mattress are 13.5 inches tall. This is an average profile height, so most standard fitted sheets should fit comfortably around the edges.

Does the WinkBed sag?

WinkBeds use sag-resistant tempered-steel support cores with reinforced edges as well as comfort layers that are lab-tested for durability. Zoned support through the lumbar region provides extra pushback through the middle of the mattress where sagging tends to be most prominent. For heavier sleepers, the Plus mattress incorporates high-density foam and resilient zoned latex in the comfort system to prevent sagging.

Where are WinkBeds Mattresses made?

All WinkBed mattresses are made in the United States in factories located in Wisconsin, Virginia, and Arizona.
