Zenhaven Mattress Review

The Zenhaven is an all-latex mattress sold by Saatva. Saatva also manufactures the Saatva Classic, an innerspring mattress; the Loom & Leaf, a memory foam mattress; the Saatva HD, a hybrid bed for larger sleepers; the Solaire, an air bed; and the Saatva Youth Mattress, a flippable bed for younger sleepers.

Measuring 10 inches thick, the Zenhaven is flippable and has two firmness levels, one on each side. The "Luxury Plush" side measures medium-soft, or 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The "Gentle Firm" side measures firm, or 7-8 out of 10.

The Zenhaven mattress is zoned, so areas beneath heavier parts of the body offer more support. Zoned mattresses tend to relieve pressure and promote spinal alignment.

Both sides of the Zenhaven have a wool layer beneath the cover, which acts as a natural fire retardant. Because of the wool, the Zenhaven doesn't require synthetic chemicals to protect it from fire.

This review covers everything you will need to know to determine if the Zenhaven Mattress by Saatva is a good choice for you.

Zenhaven Mattress Review: Our Verdict

Choose The Zenhaven if...
  • You're eco-conscious. This mattress is made of natural Talaylay latex, New Zealand wool, and an organic cotton cover, with no fire-retardant chemicals added.
  • You prefer a springy mattress. 100% Talalay latex gives the bed a responsive feel.
  • You want a long-lasting mattress. Natural latex is extremely durable, and all-latex beds can last for decades.
  • You're a side sleeper weighing less than 130 pounds. Zoned support provides spinal alignment to this group.
  • You're a back or stomach sleeper weighing over 130 pounds. The firmer side of the bed provides adequate support for average weight and heavier back and stomach sleepers.
Keep Shopping if...
  • You want a highly contouring mattress. Latex feels very different from memory foam. The Saatva Loom & Leaf is a better choice for people wanting a bed with some "hug."

How Much Is the Zenhaven Mattress?

The Zenhaven runs $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress. This price is on the low-to-average end for an all-latex bed. Latex beds tend to cost more than innerspring and all-foam mattresses due to the costs associated with sourcing latex. Some natural latex beds cost upwards of $4,000.

All of the latex found in the Zenhaven is natural Talalay latex sourced in the U.S., which adds to the bed's price. Many all-latex beds are not entirely natural and contain synthetic latex layers, or blended layers made of both natural and synthetic latex, which costs less than natural latex. Organic cotton and wool also increase the cost of this bed.

How Does the Zenhaven Mattress Feel?

Like most latex mattresses, the Zenhaven is a responsive bed. It has a springy feel and "bounces" in response to weight and movement.

The Zenhaven doesn't give the highly contouring sensation associated with memory foam. Sleepers do not feel "hugged" by the bed. Instead, they feel like they are floating on top of it rather than sinking into the mattress.

That said, the Zenhaven still provides pressure relief. Because of the mattress's zoned construction, most sleepers will feel uniformly supported and not develop pressure points on this mattress.

Although it is responsive, the bed still feels soft and provides cushion. The medium-soft side feels softer than the firm side of the bed.

What Is the Zenhaven Made Of?

The Zenhaven is made of the following materials:

  • Cover Material: Organic cotton, 1" wool
  • Comfort Layer (Medium-Soft Side): 1.5" Talalay latex
  • Comfort Layer (Firm Side): 1.5" Talaylay Latex
  • Support Core (Medium-Soft Side): 3" Talalay latex
  • Support Core (Firm Side): 3" Talalay latex

A 1-inch layer of New Zealand wool beneath the organic cotton cover on each side of the mattress serves as a fire barrier, rather than the synthetic chemical-based fire retardants many brands use.

Since the Zenhaven mattress is flippable, the latex layers act as either support or comfort layers depending on which side of the bed is facing up. There are four latex layers in total.

When the medium-soft side is facing up, the top latex layer is zoned, measures 1.5 inches, and has a plush feel. Beneath it is a slightly firmer 3-inch Talalay latex layer . Next is another 3-inch Talalay latex layer with a firm feel. Beneath that lies a 1.5-inch zoned Talalay latex layer with a moderately firm feel.

When the firm side of the mattress is facing up, the layers are reversed. Regardless of which side of the mattress is being used, there is a zoned comfort layer on top. In the uppermost zoned layers, there are different numbers and sizes of holes distributed in five different segments. Areas likely to fall beneath heavier parts of the body feel firmer as a result.

Does the Zenhaven Isolate Motion?

Rating: 4/5 (Medium Soft) and 3/5 (Firm)

The Zenhaven mattress isolates motion well. The softer side of the mattress transfers even less motion than the firmer side. Motion isolation is important to people who share a bed with a partner, kids, or pets.

When weight is put on a bed, some motion travels across the surface of the mattress. If a mattress doesn't isolate that motion well, sleepers may be disturbed. Most sleepers on the Zenhaven will not be bothered by motion transfer when sleep partners move around or get in or out of bed.

Memory foam tends to absorb motion rather than transfer it. Although latex isolates motion well, memory foam can isolate it even better. Latex isolates motion better than innerspring mattresses, however, which tend to transfer motion the most of all mattress types.

Does the Zenhaven Sleep Cool?

Rating: 4/5

The Zenhaven sleeps cool and is an attractive option for people who sleep hot. Latex beds are generally cooler than those with memory foam, which tend to trap heat. The Zenhaven's perforated, zoned top comfort layers on each side allow for increased airflow, which has a cooling effect.

Most sleepers will be satisfied with the temperature neutrality of the Zenhaven. Those who need an even cooler bed might want to opt for an innerspring mattress instead. Innerspring mattresses and hybrid beds with thick coil layers can be cooler than all-latex beds such as the Zenhaven. Coil layers allow for a lot of cooling airflow, and coil layers do not trap heat.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating: 3/5 (Medium Soft) and 4/5 (Firm)

Movement on the Zenhaven mattress is easy because of the bed's responsive nature. The springiness of latex adds "bounce" to this bed, which can faciliate movement during sex. Both latex and innerspring mattresses are known to promote rather than inhibit movement.

In comparison, all-foam beds and hybrid mattresses with thick memory foam layers tend to inhibit movement. Memory foam responds to body heat by cradling the body. It can take seconds for body impressions created in memory foam to fill back up, which can lead to sleepers feeling temporarily stuck in the bed.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating: 4/5

The Zenhaven Mattress is an excellent choice for couples wanting a responsive, eco-friendly bed. Since the mattress isolates motion well, sleepers are unlikely to be bothered when their partners roll over or get in or out of bed during the night. Those using the medium-soft side of the bed enjoy even better motion isolation than those using the firm side.

The Zenhaven also facilitates rather than inhibits movement, making it a good mattress for sex. Couples who have sex on the Zenhaven will find that the springiness of the bed combined with strong edge support is a plus.

Strong edge support also allows couples to use the full surface of the mattress, which can help keep a shared bed from feeling crowded. The firm side of the mattress provides even stronger edge support than the medium-soft side.

What About Off-gassing?

Rating: 4/5

Off-gassing isn't a major issue with the Zenhaven Mattress. Most customers purchasing this bed will notice very little odor upon having it set up. Any noticeable odor will dissipate quickly.

Off-gassing odors are the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) escaping from newly manufactured products. Memory foam and polyfoam are the mattress components most known for off-gassing strong chemical smells.

Saatva claims that there are no VOCs released from the Zenhaven. Off-gassing from the Zenhaven is milder than that from all-foam beds or hybrid beds with significant foam layers.

What Type of Sleeper Is the Zenhaven Mattress Best for?

Since the Zenhaven Mattress is flippable and offers two firmness levels in one bed, it works well for a variety of sleepers. Sleepers of all position preferences find comfort in the Zenhaven, though some prefer the bed more than others. Body weight also plays a role in determining how highly a sleeper rates the bed.

The uppermost layer of both sides of the Zenhaven Mattress is zoned. Zoned layers promote spinal alignment by providing variable support to different parts of the body and keeping the abdomen from sinking in.

The firm side of the Zenhaven provides adequate support to back and stomach sleepers. Here's a closer look at how the Zenhaven performs for different people based on their sleep position preferences:

  • Side Sleepers: The medium-soft side of the Zenhaven stands out when it comes to promoting spinal alignment in side sleepers weighing under 130 pounds. This group feels the right balance of support across their body and doesn't experience pressure points. Side sleepers weighing over 130 pounds also enjoy the Zenhaven, but don't rate it nearly as highly as those weighing under 130 pounds do.
  • Combination Sleepers: The firm side of the Zenhaven excels at supporting stomach sleepers weighing over 130 pounds. Stomach sleepers and those who change positions throughout the night enjoy the Zenhaven Mattress.
  • Back Sleepers: The Zenhaven provides adequate lumbar support to back sleepers weighing over 130 pounds. These sleepers tend to prefer the firm side of the mattress. They are unlikely to develop pressure points or experience back discomfort from sleeping on this bed. Back sleepers weighing under 130 pounds also enjoy the Zenhaven, but they don't rate it as highly as sleepers weighing over 130 pounds do.

How Does Body Weight Impact the Zenhaven's Performance?

A sleeper's body weight and sleep position preference both impact how much they enjoy the Zenhaven and which side of the bed is optimal for them. One side of the Zenhaven is medium-soft, or 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The other side is firm, or 7 out of 10 in terms of firmness.

Most sleepers weighing under 130 pounds prefer the medium-soft side of the mattress. In this group, side sleepers give the mattress the highest rating available. Back and stomach sleepers in this weight range also receive good support and spinal alignment from the bed.

Most sleepers weighing over 130 pounds prefer the firm side of the mattress. Although side sleepers in this group enjoy the mattress, back and stomach sleepers find it excels even more at providing them support and comfort.

Some sleepers who like soft mattresses and weigh between 130 and 230 pounds might prefer the medium-soft of the bed, but most will be better served by the firm side.

Is the Zenhaven Mattress Good for Couples?
