PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Mattress Review

Founded in 2008, PlushBeds is an online "bed-in-a-box" mattress brand that specializes in beds made with natural latex layers. This review will focus on the company's most popular model, the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss latex mattress.

The mattress is constructed with layers of ventilated Dunlop latex that have been certified as organic by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Other components include a top layer of organic wool batting and an organic cotton cover, both of which have received certification from the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The GOLS and GOTS are two of the world's leading organizations for organic material certifications.

Like many leading all-latex models, the Botanical Bliss is highly customizable. PlushBeds offers three different thickness options for the mattress: 9, 10, or 12 inches. The 9- and 10-inch models contain three individual latex layers, and the 12-inch model contains four layers. You can also select a medium (5) or firm (7-8) feel for your Botanical Bliss. If you would like to adjust the firmness of the mattress after you've received it, simply unzip the cover and swap the order of the top two layers. With these layers switched, the medium models have a medium firm (6) feel and firm models have a firm to extra firm feel (8-9).

This review will take an in-depth look at the Botanical Bliss in terms of construction and composition, pricing, and performance across different sleeper categories. You'll also find an overview of PlushBeds' shipping, return, and warranty policies.

If the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss organic latex mattress does not sound like the right bed for you, PlushBeds offers other two other models: the Luxury Bliss organic latex hybrid and the vegan-friendly Natural Bliss all-latex mattress. You'll find information about all three PlushBeds mattresses below.

How Does the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Mattress Feel?

The Botanical Bliss offers a traditional latex feel, which is characterized by a balance of gentle body-conforming and noticeable responsiveness on the surface. However, your experience on the mattress will depend on the firmness and thickness you select.

The medium feel provides the closest contouring, though you won't sink into the mattress as you might on a memory foam bed with the same firmness level. Swapping the top two layers of a medium-feel Botanical Bliss will result in a medium firm surface that conforms slightly less. The firm feel conforms to a very minimal extent and you'll feel little to no sinkage. Swap the top two layers to create a firm to extra firm feel that feels very flat and even.

The 12-inch Botanical Bliss will feel a bit plusher than the other two profiles. This can be attributed to an additional latex layer that provides extra padding for your body. Likewise, the 9-inch model has a firmer feel and the 10-inch model is essentially a balance between the other two profiles.

What Is the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Made Of?

The Botanical Bliss's material composition varies by firmness and thickness, though all designs are mostly similar. All models begin with a top layer of GOTS-certified organic wool batting. Each Botanical Bliss contains up to 10 pounds of batting material, which has a very soft feel. The batting is also very breathable and has moisture-wicking properties to keep you cool.

The 9-inch and 10-inch models contain three individual latex layers. These include a top comfort layer that supplies the bed's surface feel, a transitional layer that prevents you from sinking too deeply into the mattress, and a base layer to stabilize the entire mattress. In the 12-inch model, you'll find a fourth latex layer that adds to the support core.

For all Botanical Bliss mattresses, the top two layers can be removed and switched to adjust how firm or soft the mattress feels. The medium-feel models have top layers of plush latex and secondary layers of medium latex. Changing the order of these layers results in a medium firm feel. Firm Botanical Bliss models have a medium firm top layer and a firm secondary layer. These components can be swapped to give the mattress a firm to extra firm feel.

The Botanical Bliss mattress is encased in a cover made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, which is quilted to the organic wool batting layer. This material is exceptionally soft and breathable. You can unzip the cover to access the top two latex layers. The cover can also be removed for cleaning, but PlushBeds discourages machine-washing and suggests hand-washing or dry-cleaning instead.

Cover Material:

2" to 3" GOLS-certified organic latex

Does the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Isolate Motion?

Rating: 3/5 (all models)

The Botanical Bliss offers decent motion isolation regardless of which firmness or thickness you choose. The latex, while responsive, can reduce a fair amount of transfer across the surface of the bed. You'll feel less transfer on Botanical Bliss mattresses with a medium to medium firm feel, but the firmer models also perform reasonably well in this category.

The latex does not absorb movement and eliminate transfer quite like memory foam or polyfoam layers found in other mattresses, so couples may still experience some sleep disruptions. At the same time, the Botanical Bliss does not feel as bouncy on the surface as a hybrid or innerspring with a coil support system. In this sense, the Botanical Bliss offers middle-of-the-road motion isolation. Couples should sleep soundly, provided they are not too sensitive to surface movement.

Does the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Sleep Cool?

Rating: 4/5 (all models)

As is the case with other similarly constructed mattresses, the Botanical Bliss sleeps very cool. All latex layers are ventilated with tiny holes to promote steady airflow throughout the mattress that can help the surface maintain a comfortable temperature. The wool batting also plays a role here. In addition to being naturally breathable, the wool also wicks away moisture from your body to keep you cool and dry throughout the night. The organic cotton cover is also quite breathable, as well.

Generally speaking, all-latex mattresses offer better temperature control than memory foam or polyfoam models. This makes a latex bed suitable for people who want to feel some body-contouring but also tend to sleep hot.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating: 4/5 (all models)

No matter which firmness or thickness you pick, the Botanical Bliss offers above-average edge support. You may sink a bit when sitting along the perimeter of the bed – especially if the mattress has a medium or medium soft feel – but the dense Dunlop latex in the support core withstands compression quite well compared to high-density polyfoam and provides noticeable bounce-back. This results in less sinkage when you get on and off the mattress and more stability when you sleep close to the edges. And thanks to the natural durability of latex, the perimeter should remain fairly sturdy for the majority of the bed's lifespan.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating: 5/5 (all models)
Although preferences vary by couple, most will find that the Botanical Bliss is ideal for sex. The latex layers contour without sinking, so you and your partner will experience good traction without feeling trapped or stuck in the mattress. The responsive feel also makes it easy to move across the mattress or change positions, and stable edges allow you to utilize the entire surface of the mattress – not just the middle. The ventilated latex layers prevent uncomfortable overheating, as well. Additionally, the mattress is completely silent, which allows you to be discreet about amorous activities if other people are sleeping nearby.

What About Off-gassing?

Rating: 4/5 (all models)

Off-gassing should not be a major issue for the Botanical Bliss. You'll probably notice a faint rubber-like smell when unboxing the mattress, but thanks to the steady air circulation of the bed's ventilated layers, these odors will probably dissipate rather quickly. To speed along this process, you can place the mattress in a well-ventilated room for one to two days before sleeping on it.

Most mattresses emit off-gassing odor when they are new. Beds with foam layers are usually the biggest culprits because they release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which carry a strong chemical smell. Latex does not release VOCs, so models like the Botanical Bliss typically off-gas much less.

What Type of Sleeper Is the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Mattress Best for?

Side Sleepers:

For most side sleepers, the ideal mattress will cushion the shoulders and hips without sinking too deeply. Ample padding for these areas promotes spinal alignment, which in turn can alleviate pressure points throughout the body. We recommend the medium/medium firm Botanical Bliss for side sleepers who want close conforming and good cushioning without too much sink. Those who want more support from their mattress without sacrificing alignment may want to consider a firm/extra firm Botanical Bliss instead. Preferences for side sleepers and other positions will probably also depend on body weight (see next section for more details).

Combination Sleepers

If you sleep on your back and stomach, then you will probably find the firm/extra firm Botanical Bliss more comfortable. Both of these positions are susceptible to uncomfortable sinkage when lying on mattresses with less support, and this can lead to added pain in the neck, shoulders, and lower back. If you're a combination sleeper who sleeps on your side part of the time, then you may struggle to find a firmness level that is equally comfortable on your side and back or stomach. Thankfully, the mattress can be easily adjusted for firmness by swapping the top two layers.

Back Sleepers

Compared to side sleepers, back sleepers usually need a firmer mattress feel. Their position promotes spinal alignment, so the most comfortable bed will conform to the body without sinking too much between the hips and shoulders. A medium/medium firm Botanical Bliss will be most comfortable for back sleepers who like a balance of conforming and support, while the firm/extra firm model is best suited to those who want more reinforcement – but again, this will probably also depend on body weight.

Stomach Sleepers

Most stomach sleepers prefer firmer mattresses that provide more support to prevent the midsection from sinking too deeply, which places strain on the lower back. For this reason, we recommend the firm and extra firm models for those who mostly sleep on their stomach – especially those over 130 pounds – as the softer models will likely allow too much sinkage for proper spinal alignment in this sleeping position.

How Does Body Weight Impact the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Mattress' Performance?

As with all other mattresses, you may find the Botanical Bliss comfortable or uncomfortable based on your body type. The medium/medium firm model offers the closest contouring. While the latex won't sink quite like foam, people who weigh more than 230 pounds will probably find these firmness levels a bit too soft. On the other hand, the medium feel offers optimal conforming for many sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds – particularly side sleepers.

The firm/extra firm Botanical Bliss will not contour nearly as much as its softer counterpart. This makes it a good option for most side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, as well as back and stomach sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds. Other individuals may find these feels too firm, which can lead to added pressure points.

If you find the medium or firm feel too soft, you can swap the top two layers to make the mattress feel medium firm or extra firm, respectively. Also, PlushBeds offers comfort layer exchanges during the 100-night sleep trial. This means you can exchange your existing layer for one that feels softer or firmer, depending on your preferences.

Is the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Mattress Good for Couples?

The Botanical Bliss offers a slew of benefits for couples. The mattress offers exceptionally temperature neutrality and should resist overheating – a common issue for co-sleepers. Above-average edge support also ensures you and your partner can use the entire surface of the bed for sleeping, as well as sex, and won't feel confined to the middle.

The mattress also isolates motion reasonably well, but the surface is too responsive to completely eliminate transfer. As a result, people who share their bed with someone and wake up easily due to movement in bed may experience some sleep disruptions on the Botanical Bliss. That said, we don't foresee major problems for most couples.
