This article will look specifically at the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt mattress.

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress is a newer product from Tempur-Pedic. It features advanced adaptability technology for personalized support. A unique cooling and antimicrobial cover protects the mattress, and helps reduce the buildup of common allergens. Like all products from this company, the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress utilizes the proprietary TEMPUR foam material that was originally developed by NASA for use in space shuttles.

There are two versions of this mattress: the original TEMPUR-Adapt, and the Hybrid TEMPUR-Adapt. The hybrid features metal coils and layers of foam, while the flagship version is an all-foam construction. This review will focus on the all-foam, original TEMPUR-Adapt.

TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Review: Our Verdict

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress is a high-quality all-foam bed. Its main selling point is its use of Tempur-Pedic foam, a proprietary memory foam modified from a material originally developed by NASA. It offers very good conforming, excellent motion isolation, and a comfortable sleeping experience for those who prefer medium firmness. It’s also one of the more affordable models from Tempur-Pedic, offering an approachable entry point into the world of this premium mattress brand.

With that said, the TEMPUR-Adapt is not without its drawbacks. For one, we found that this bed traps body heat, resulting in an uncomfortably warm sleep experience for some people. It also has poor edge support, which may be an issue for those with limited mobility. And although it’s cheap for a Tempur-Pedic, it’s still well above the average price-point for an all-foam mattress.

Choose The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt if…

  • You sleep with a partner, child or pet and are easily disturbed by their motion
  • You want a highly conforming foam mattress
  • You want the luxurious feel of a Tempur-Pedic at a more approachable price point
  • You want a mattress with good pressure relief

Keep Shopping if…

  • You’re on a tight budget
  • You tend to sleep hot
  • You want a mattress with good edge support
  • You weigh more than 230 pounds and sleep on your back or stomach

How Much Is the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress?

The TEMPUR-Adapt is one of the more affordable models from Tempur-Pedic. With that said, the TEMPUR-Adapt is on the pricier side compared to the average all-foam mattress from other manufacturers.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are known for their quality and comfort. While they are on the pricier side, they still offer good value for those looking for a premium mattress. If you’re looking to get a Tempur-Pedic without spending too much, this model is among their most affordable options.

How Does the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Feel?

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress is a comfortable mattress, with excellent conforming and pressure relief. It’s a medium-firm bed (5 out of 10), allowing it to nicely hug the body’s curves.

The bed utilizes Tempur-Pedic’s unique foam material. It’s a type of memory foam, which quickly adapts to the shape of your body, providing customized support and comfort. Sleepers will definitely notice that it feels like you are sinking into this foam material. Some people feel like this is a mattress you sleep in, rather than on. This effect is particularly noticeable for people over 230 pounds, who may find that they sink into this relatively soft foam a bit too much for comfort.

When you lay down on the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress, you can immediately feel it beginning to conform to the shape of your body. This is ideal for people who enjoy the body-hugging feel of memory foam. However, it also contributes to this model’s tendency to trap body heat, at times leading to an uncomfortably hot sleeping surface.

Overall, this is a comfortable memory foam mattress for those who appreciate a closely conforming feel. Its moderate firmness level makes it a good choice for most side sleepers, many back sleepers, and some stomach sleepers. It’s a fairly versatile mattress, as it can appeal to a wide range of sleepers. With that said, it’s certainly not without some downsides.

What Is the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Made Of?

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt is an all-foam mattress. It has several distinct layers that make up its construction and is 11 inches thick in total. Keep in mind that this section refers only to the all-foam version of this bed, and not the hybrid model.

The support core is a thick layer of relatively firm polyfoam. This provides the deep compression support needed for proper spinal alignment and gives the mattress its overall shape. This polyfoam support layer is much firmer than the memory foam layers, which helps prevent the sleeper’s body from sinking in too deep.

A three-part comfort layer consists of two memory foam layers and a knit cover. Original TEMPUR memory foam is used for advanced adaptability, giving this bed the signature responsiveness of Tempur-Pedic mattresses. A softer TEMPUR-ES memory foam layer provides the initial cushy comfort, and works in tandem with the other materials to produce a well-balanced overall feel.

Finally, an advanced knit cover encases this mattress. The cover is infused with an antimicrobial treatment, which helps to reduce the buildup of common allergens. It also utilizes cooling technology to help keep the bed at a comfortable temperature.

Does the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Isolate Motion?

Rating 5/5

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress isolates motion very well. Movement on one side of the mattress will barely be felt on the opposing side, if at all.

The proprietary foam used in Tempur-Pedic mattresses like this one does an excellent job of absorbing movement. The all-foam design of this bed means that the sleeper’s movements are isolated to their immediate surroundings, and do not transfer throughout the mattress. Compared to innerspring and hybrid models, the TEMPUR-Adapt does an excellent job of minimizing motion transfer. Even when compared to other all-foam models, the TEMPUR-Adapt still excels, due to its specially designed foams and its medium firmness rating.

Does the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Sleep Cool?

Rating 2/5

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress does not sleep very cool.

One of the downfalls of the Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary foam material is that it tends to trap body heat. As the body sinks into the foam, heat is absorbed and reflected back at the sleeper. There is minimal airflow due to the dense all-foam design, which makes it difficult for the mattress to cool itself. While the TEMPUR-Adapt does have a cooling cover, our testers still found that this bed got too warm on hot nights. Those who typically sleep hot at night may wish to look for a different mattress.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating 2/5

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress does sag significantly around the outer perimeter. Our testers rated it below-average for edge support.

This is a common issue with all-foam beds, and particularly those that are soft to medium firm. The foam tends to sink in a lot when significant pressure is applied to a single area. When a sleeper sits on the side of the bed, there is significant sinkage. This can make it more difficult for people with limited mobility to get in and out of bed at night.

Edge support is also important to prevent the “roll-off” feeling that you can get when you are lying near the edge of the bed. Fortunately, our testers did not notice this effect too much on the TEMPUR-Adapt.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating 2/5

The TEMPUR-Adapt scored below-average for many of the characteristics that are most important for sex. The medium firmness, all-foam design of the bed means that there is a good amount of sinkage, which makes movement more difficult. The bed tends to trap body heat, which can be a problem during sex. The lack of solid edge support also makes it more difficult to utilize the entire surface of the mattress.

What About Off-gassing?

Rating 2/5

The TEMPUR-Adapt had more off-gassing than average. Most foam mattresses tend to release some odors during the first few days after setup. These odors are harmless, but some people find the smell unpleasant. Our testers noticed smells from the TEMPUR-Adapt for several days, and they were stronger than the average foam mattress.

If you are bothered by the smell, we recommend setting up your new mattress in a well-ventilated space, and allowing it to air out for several days.

What Type of Sleeper Is the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Best for?

The position you sleep in will have a significant impact on which type of mattress is best for you. A bed that feels perfect for a side sleeper may be entirely too soft for a stomach sleeper. We tested and evaluated the TEMPUR-Adapt in all the different sleep positions, and here is what we found:

Side Sleepers

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress excels for side sleepers. The moderate firmness and highly conforming memory foam is ideal for those who sleep on their sides. The TEMPUR-Adapt’s foam allows the shoulders and hips to sink in, reducing the pressure that side sleepers often feel in these areas. The underlying support foam keeps the body from sinking in too deeply, maintaining a great balance of comfort, conforming and deep support. Our testers found that this mattress was most comfortable when in a side-sleeping position.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers, meaning those who sleep in a variety of positions, may do well on the TEMPUR-Adapt. The bed’s moderate firmness level makes it relatively versatile for several different sleep preferences. It performs best in a side-sleeping position, but many back and stomach sleepers may also find it to be comfortable.

Back Sleepers

The TEMPUR-Adapt rated below-average for back sleepers. Many back sleepers find that this model is too soft, causing them to sink in too much, or wake up with lower back pain. Lighter back sleepers may still be comfortable on the TEMPUR-Adapt, but anyone who weighs more than 130 pounds will likely find it too soft.

How Does Body Weight Impact the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress's Performance?

The weight of each sleeper will also affect the performance of a mattress. Heavier people will sink in more, and typically prefer firmer beds. Lighter people may find that medium and firm mattresses feel too firm, and do not provide enough contouring. For the TEMPUR-Adapt, here is what our testers found:

For sleepers under 130 pounds, the TEMPUR-Adapt performed well. This model’s superior conforming, combined with a relatively soft feel, is well suited to sleepers of this weight class. The TEMPUR-Adapt scored very well for side sleepers in this category, well for back sleepers, and fair for stomach sleepers.

For sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, the TEMPUR-Adapt performed fairly well. Side sleepers rated it very well, as they found that the mattress provided the right mix of contouring, while still providing the deep support needed. Back and stomach sleepers of this category rated this model below-average, however. Many test subjects found that the TEMPUR-Adapt felt too soft, and allowed the body to sink in too much for proper support.

For sleepers over 230 pounds, the TEMPUR-Adapt performed poorly. Most sleepers in this category found that they sank into the soft memory foam too much, leading to back pain and improper support. While some side sleepers in this category still found the TEMPUR-Adapt to be comfortable, back and stomach sleepers rated this model poorly.

Is the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt Mattress Good for Couples?

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress may or may not be a good choice for couples, depending on a number of factors. The biggest consideration here is that the TEMPUR-Adapt performs best for side sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds. If either partner weighs more than 230 pounds, or prefers to sleep on their stomach or back, this may not be the best choice.

The TEMPUR-Adapt performs very well in one category that’s important for couples: motion isolation. Our testers noted that movement on one side of the bed was almost unnoticeable on the opposite side. This is a huge perk if you or your partner are easily disturbed by movement.

With that said, this model also scores below-average for some other important factors for couples. It has weaker edge support, making it more difficult to utilize the entire sleep surface. The all-foam construction means the bed tends to sleep hot, particularly when shared by two sleepers on a warm night.

Overall, the TEMPUR-Adapt will be well suited to some couples – but for many, there are better options available.
