Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Review

The Mint is one of three mattresses produced by direct-to-consumer mattress brand Tuft & Needle, alongside the T&N Original and the T&N Hybrid. This medium-firm all-foam mattress gives the sleeper a happy medium between “sleeping on” and “sleeping in” the bed. Like all Tuft & Needle mattresses, the comfort layer of the Mint is made from Adaptive Foam, the brand’s proprietary in-house foam, which produces that neutral, soft-but-not-sinking feel. The high-density polyfoam foundation of the mattress also provides a good deal of support, especially for a softer mattress. In some ways, the Mint can be considered a second generation version of the Original: whereas the original has only the comfort level and the support core, the Mint has an additional transitional foam level, which helps provide extra comfort and support.

How Much Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress?

One of the biggest advantages of the Mint is that it is very reasonably priced, especially when compared to other mattresses of similar quality. Tuft & Needle was founded on the premise of offering high-quality mattresses at lower price points, and the Mint is no exception. At $995 for a Queen, the Mint isn’t a bargain basement purchase, but it is definitely on the lower end of the spectrum cost-wise.

Sizes Dimensions Weight Price
Twin 39" x 75" x 10" 50 lbs. $595
Twin XL 39" x 80" x 10" 52 lbs. $695
Full 54" x 75" x 10" 66 lbs. $845
Queen 60" x 80" x 10" 80 lbs. $995
King 76" x 80" x 10" 100 lbs. $1,145
California King 72" x 84" x 12" 100 lbs. $1,145

How Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Feel?

The Tuft & Needle Mint is around a 6 on the firmness scale, with 1 being the softest, and 10 being the firmest. This means that it is slightly firmer than it is soft, but it is on the soft end of the spectrum for a firm mattress. The Mint is neither an ultra-firm nor an ultra-soft mattress.

When you lay down on the Mint, you can feel some of the contouring and conforming you generally get from memory foam, but with more responsiveness and resilience. This creates a sensation somewhere between “sleeping in” the mattress (as you might get from memory foam), and “sleeping on” the mattress (as you might get from particularly firm foam mattresses, or non-foam mattresses.) The soft cover and the comfort layer of the mattress provide a cozy, snug feel to the sleep surface, but you can definitely also sense the support and even weight distribution provided by the transition layer and the core.

What Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Made Of?

Cover Material

The cover of the Mint is made of thin, breathable polyester fabric, which helps promote air flow and keeps the mattress surface temperature-neutral.

Comfort Layers

The comfort layer is made up of 3 inches of Tuft & Needle’s proprietary Adaptive Foam. With a density of 3.5 PCF, the Adaptive Foam has a quick response to pressure, and supports the back and spine. It has a neutral, soft polyfoam feel, which comfortably cushions pressure points without the deep sink of memory foam. The Adaptive Foam is also infused with graphite and cooling ceramic gel, which absorbs and dissipates heat.

Transition Layer

The transitional layer of the Mint is what differentiates the mattress from the original Tuft & Needle design. It is made up of 2 inches of 3 PCF polyoam, which acts as a barrier between the softer comfort layer and the firmer support core. When you lay down on the mattress, the transition layer helps prevent you from sinking too far down into the comfort layer, and provides an extra layer of cushioning between your body and the firm foundation.

Support Core

The foundation of the Tuft & Needle Mint is a 7 inch 1.8 PFC high-density polyfoam support core, which helps the mattress distribute weight evenly, elevate the hips, and maintain spinal alignment. All four sides of the support core are reinforced to provide extra edge support. It is also open-celled, which helps with air-flow and cooling.

Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Isolate Motion?

Rating: 4/5

The Tuft & Needle Mint isolates motion quite well.

Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress keeps movement on one part of the bed from being felt on another part of the bed. If you sleep with a partner, especially if one or both of you are light sleepers, motion isolation is a very important quality to look for in a mattress.

The Tuft & Needle Mint performs well in the motion isolation department. Even though it is fairly bouncy for an all-foam mattress, the three-layer design (comfort, transition, and foundation) is effective at absorbing and containing motion. While it may not totally eliminate all motion transfer, it should be able to isolate most common motions (ie, a partner getting in or out of bed, or moving around in their sleep).

Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Sleep Cool?

Rating: 4/5

The Tuft & Needle Mint moderates temperature very well, especially for an all-foam mattress.

One of the major setbacks of foam is that it tends to sleep hotter than other mattress materials. However, the Mint was engineered with cooling in mind. The comfort level is infused with 30% more cooling graphite than the Tuft & Needle Original, as well as ceramic gel beads, both of which help absorb and disperse body heat. In addition, the open-celled structure of the core helps ventilate the mattress, despite the high density of the core foam. These features help to keep the sleep surface temperature-neutral, which is great for hot sleepers.

Will It Sag Along the Edges?

Rating: 3/5

The Mint performs fairly well when it comes to edge support, especially when lying down.

Edge support refers to how well the edges of the mattress support your weight, either while sitting down or lying down on the mattress edge. Edge support is especially important for people who tend to sleep closer to the edges of their bed, as well as people who tend to spend time sitting on the edges of their bed.

Another difference between the Original Tuft & Needle and the Mint is the Mint’s enhanced edge support. The support core of the mattress has reinforced foam around the edges, which helps the mattress keep its shape under pressure.

You may experience some sinkage when sitting down on the edge of the bed, due to the softness of the comfort level. However, the edges of the Mint should be able to consistently support your weight while lying down. This is a definite plus for couples, who often find themselves needing to make the most out of the entire surface of their mattress.

Is It Good for Sex?

Rating: 3/5

The Mint is generally suitable for sex.

There are a few things that the Mint has going for it when it comes to being a sex-friendly mattress.

The thickness of the Mint and the steadiness of its core allow it to support and absorb vigorous motion, and the enhanced edges of the mattress help support applied weight and motion from different positions. In addition, the Mint’s mix of resilience and cushioning prevents participants from sinking too far into the mattress, which allows for free range of movement on the mattress surface. As an added bonus, the Mint is virtually silent, which is great for discretion.

One thing the Mint lacks in the sex compatabiity department is a significant degree of bounce. The Mint has more “bounce” than most memory foam mattresses. However, like many all-foam mattresses, you will probably not get a full “bounce” sensation from the Mint, as you would on a mattress with an innerspring.

What About Off-gassing?

Rating: 3/5

Off-gassing refers to a chemical smell that comes off of most foam mattresses when they are unboxed. This smell comes from the production and packaging process. Though the chemicals that produce the smell are not harmful, the smell can be unpleasant, especially if you are particularly scent sensitive.

Like most other foam mattresses, the Tuft & Needle Mint can emit some initial off-gassing when it first comes out of the box. However, the vast majority of customers report that the smell goes away very quickly, often within 24 hours.

What Type of Sleeper Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Best for?

Every mattress is different, with unique advantages and disadvantages for different types of sleepers. In general, the Tuft & Needle Mint is best for side sleepers and back sleepers under 230 pounds. The Mint is less suitable for strict stomach sleepers, especially if they are over 130 pounds.

  • Side Sleepers: The Mint is especially suited for side sleepers. In general, side sleepers need softer mattresses, and the Mint was designed to be softer than the original Tuft & Needle design. The comfort layer provides enough cushioning to keep most side sleepers happy, and to keep pressure off of their shoulders and hips. Meanwhile, the transition layer and support core prevent side sleepers from sinking too far into the mattress. This is especially true for side sleepers under 230 pounds, as side sleepers who are 230 pounds and over may find that the mattress does not provide sufficient support.
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers also tend to enjoy this mattress. The combination of contouring and support keeps weight off of pressure points while preventing hip sinkage. This is essential for back sleepers, who need a level sleep surface that provides lumbar support and keeps the spine in alignment. As is the case for side sleepers, this mattress is especially popular among back sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds.
  • Stomach Sleepers: For stomach sleepers, the Mint can be a bit of a mixed bag. Stomach sleepers tend to need firmer mattresses for hip and chest support. The Mint is on the softer side of medium-firm, and therefore may not be firm enough for some stomach sleepers. Though stomach sleepers who are 130 pounds and under may find that the Mint offers enough support to keep their chest and hips level, it will probably not offer enough support for strict stomach sleepers who are any heavier.

How Does Body Weight Impact the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress's Performance?

By and large, the Tuft & Needle Mint is best suited for people who are under 230 pounds. As mentioned above, the Mint is on the softer side for a medium-firm mattress. People who are 230 pounds and above generally seek mattresses that are firmer and offer more support. Sleepers in this weight class may experience unevenness in the Mint’s surface around the hips, and excessive sagging around the midsection. This is because the Mint does not have the structural support needed to keep their spines aligned or their hips, shoulders, and chest on an even level. Misalignment and uneven pressure relief can cause soreness around pressure points, back issues, and other aches and pains.

People who are 230 pounds and over will probably want to skip the Mint and consider a mattress that is firmer and more supportive, such as the Tuft & Needle Hybrid.

Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Good for Couples?

The Mint is a good pick for couples for a number of reasons.

Edge Support

Due to the reinforced sides around its support core, the Mint has good edge support. It is especially good at keeping its shape under the weight of a person sleeping on the edge of the bed. This is important for couples who want to make the most of their sleep surface and utilize the edges of the bed as well as the middle.

Motion Isolation

The motion isolation provided by the all-foam Mint is great for couples. No one wants to be woken up by their partner moving in their sleep, or getting in and out of bed during the night. Motion isolation is a plus for most couples, but is especially valuable if one or both partners are light sleepers.

Sleeps Cool

Sleeping too hot is a one of the most common complaints that people have about all-foam mattresses. As co-sleepers, couples have twice as much body heat to contend with. This makes the Mint’s temperature neutrality especially attractive. There are many features of the Mint that make the Mint a good choice for couples who are looking to cool down their sleep surface, including the breathable polyester cover, the graphite and gel cooling agents in the comfort level, and the open-celled construction of the support core.

Good for Sex

For most couples, it’s important that a mattress is both a good place to sleep and a good place to have sex. The Mint has a range of sex-supportive features, from its edge support to how easy it is to move on the mattress surface. When it comes to sex, the Mint is especially suited for couples who want the pressure relief they might get from memory foam without the potential sinkage.
